Fracking

Yes that will happen I think not sure how far off it is but nuclear fusion is the future
Clean unlimited energy

Never happen!!! Why would they offer this they can make much more profit from limited energy as it has a price associated with it. In fact this would reduce pricing and profits not what the greedy shareholders want at all.

Its curious, there is still an explosion underground
however minor that may be,
It doesn't take a lot to kick off an earthquake.

I had cause recently to excavate a couple of decent sized tree stumps,
from hardened clay.
It didn't take that long to expose the roots using a pressure washer,
and create a void under them.

Its the voids and mini explosions that concern me.
Even if they are "Controlled"
There is a great saying, it applies mostly to "wildlife"
BUT "Nature Apporres a vacuum"

Are you thinking of avalanches?

Earthquakes take massive forces to generate even minor ones... tectonic plates moving generally. The ones they falsely call earthquakes which are like landfall generated ones are not really earthquakes.

There only explosives that are used is when the perforating gun is run into the liner to perforate it. This is done with a small charge designed to punch through the liner wall. This can be done over several hundred feet in stages. It is something that has been used in oil and gas production since it all began. It is carefully designed to perforate the tubing. Too large a charge will knacker the liner and is self defeating. The rock is fractured hydraulically. This is done to improve the permeability of the gas/oil bearing rock and allow the it to flow more freely. The sand in the fluid helps to keep the fissures open. The fracking process is designed to produce lots of small fissures not a few big ones. A well can be fracked several times as the fissures caused by the fracturing will close up over time.
The well is generally drilled following the rock formation that holds the gas and oil. This is generally horizontally but can be at an angle depending on how the rock formation runs.
A drilling rig close to your house won’t mean that the well is right under it. The end of the well could be a considerable distance from the drill rig and quite deep. Deep wells are easier to drill as it allows more distance to offset the drill string to drill horizontally.
Its not just a hole in the ground although it is possible to frack an open hole completion which is quick and easy. Most are lined with steel liners and fracked using a sliding ball system or mechanical isolaters to allow smaller sections to be fracked individually.
I'm not saying that accidents don’t occur and that there aren’t issues that don’t need to be addressed. There is always the possibility for something to go wrong. It is up to the government to put robust legislation in place and enforce it. But fracking is coming. Get used to the idea.

Thank you Gary for a very informative post. (y)

A very interesting and well thought out post.

As I am a part time devils advocate and all round good guy,
I'm wondering whether I should believe you or the
the "anti's" experts that I have heard discussing
This on various programmes ?

You are probably right, it probably is a "fore-gone conclusion"
as there is potentially so much money to be made.

I can't see it reducing energy bills
(as has been claimed) though.

So as long as its NIMBY who am I to stop / question or otherwise object to so called progress?
But of course I do sympathise with the people who's "back yards" it will be in.

Cobra, nothing wrong with being cycnical or a devils advocate. Technology for fracking will develop over time just like technology has developed for drilling offshore. 20 years ago some of the oil and gas that is now being produced couldn't have been.

The design of the well will be based on several factors. Depth, what rock it passses through, distance pressure. Liners will be run to stop the well bore collapsing and there may be further casings outside that. If the gas is at high pressure the design will be very different from a low pressure well. Methods of recovery progress over time. Older oil fields are injected with high pressure water and some ironically use gas lift to get oil out. As the reservoir pressure decreases then these alternative methods are used to maximise the yield from the reservoir. It is these constant inprovements in recovery technology that mean that there is probably still the same amount of oil/gas in the North Sea to be recovered as has been taken out.

You dont get a massive space where oil and gas is formed. It is contained in a rock strata and surrounded by impermeable rock. The ease with with the oil/gas flows through the rock is called the permeability. Easier it flows the easier it is to recover. Thats not to say that revovery doesnt put stesses into the rock but its unlikely that someones house is going to dissapear due to the recovery.

The end of a well bore can be 5-6 Kilometres away from where the drilling rig is so if one turns up next to your house youll be ok. Not that I would want one next to mine.

As I sit here writing this I can see on the skyline in front of me twenty six wind turbines polluting what was once a very nice view. We protested, the local authorities protested and we still got them. I'm guessing it will be the same with fracking. However, I would far rather have the skyline dotted with twenty six "christmas trees" than the towering monstrosities that are the wind turbines.

I should add that there is a current proposal to double the number of current turbines to FIFTY TWO. I have no doubt the "investors" will get their way…again.

You wont get a skyline dotted with Xmas trees. They are only about 8 feet tall.

I like fracking, I like fracking, if you don't like fracking tough luck.
