Yes
hi all, would 3 FPS be too slow for wildlife photography?
thanks chris.

That depends entirely on what you're taking pictures of really, if it's cheetahs sprinting after an antelope I'd say yeah it's too slow.

The higher FPS just allows you more of a burst than a lower one, so perhaps you may get one frame out of 10 with the perfect framing and composition of your fast moving subject.

Good technique and planning however means you may well get close or identical shots at the lower FPS.

So no you don't need to have it but it might be useful.

Of course if the subject is not moving it makes no difference whatsoever.

Its probably one of those things where; if you only have 3fps its fine and you dont mind, but have 5fps and suddenly you cant imagine how you ever coped with 3.

It does depend on what your shooting though, if you are on a budget i think fps can be sacrificed in most situations. I have 3fps and i find it good enough for football, you might not though.

iv found it hard getting good photos at bird displays this is why i`m asking.
maybe i just need more practice:thinking:

 thats good to know,i`ll keep trying:thumbs:
any tips ?

It's far too slow.

Just think about it, if you're shooting at 1/1000 that means you've missed 997 photo opportunities that second, virtually all of the action, not good :(

but i`d:thinking: still not be able to take 1000 fps

It's grumpy knickers sense of humour. He means don't worry about it.

All you need is practice........ and patience!!!!:)

depends how precise you are at capturing an image.

think about a sniper. Boom Headshot - 1 bullet
marine - SPRAY SPRAY SPRAY - 400 bullets.

both do the same job.

Fixed that for you!

Chris, as the others have said, getting BsIF to come out well is bloody hard, and several 'togs on here make it look easy.

FPS can help, but getting the exposure and focus settings right is far more important, that and loads of practice.

Trying to get it right first time at displays is going to be difficult, because most birds of prey are going to be fairly fast movers, so starting on something slower would be a better bet.

Wouldn't quite same the SAME job.

^^Exactly.
Take 1 second of time.
If you're shooting a single frame at 1/1000 you have 1000 chances to capture the perfect image.
That's you as in, you are in control of the situation and can fire at exactly the right moment.
10fps is probably a high average for modern d-slr performance (and a lot more than the op was talking about) so even at 1/8000 that gives your camera just 10 chances to capture the perfect image.
Thats your camera as in, you had your finger on the shutter release for a full second, hoping for the best. Your camera has no idea what is going on infront of it, it doesn't know that the animal you're photographing just looked up, straight at the camera for 1/20th of a second, i was too busy processing the image it took 1/10th of a second ago.

A dose of luck is a help too but not as easy to arrange as experience and patience!

High FPS can help a little if the action is fast moving, allowing more instants to be captured BUT, be aware that the clatter of the mirror and shutter whiring away at 5+ FPS can also alert the subjects to your presence and can even frighten them away.
