I'm looking to get hold of a telephoto lens to go with my Olympus E-420 and am looking at both of the following:

Olympus 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 ED
Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC (Olympus Four Thirds Fit)

which come in at around the £100 mark.

I accept that the Sigma has a longer Zoom than the Olympus but what are your thoughts as to the merits of each and if it was your money which would you purchase?

Well the Sigma 55-200 does not have the optical quality of the Zuiko 40-150 and is a little soft, personaly I'd go for the 40- 150 . :)

I have the 55-200 Sigma and it's fine, not the sharpest but it's plenty sharp still. And for the price tag it's definately worth a look.

Thanks Guy's. I'm in London in a few days and will try to see if I can see either in the flesh before making a decision.

Ended up opting for the Zukio 40-150 as I managed to pick one up at LHR for £50 (tax free shopping).

I don't think it's the current model as it's f3.5-4.5 (and was ex-display) but at the price I can't complain.

Does it have a metal mount? If so it's the earlier 40-150 which is a very good kit lens. So good that I refuse to sell it even though I bought the 50-200 SWD because it is so small and light in comparison I take that with me for holidays.

Yes. Metal mount. The only thing I'm missing is the lens cap but I should be able to pick one up tomorrow.
