Hi,

I managed to find this old photo on a website of an area which I was born and grew up in along with my dad. In the photo there appears to be a picture of a little boy walking down the road(who my family believe is my dad when he was young going by the date on the photo) but because the image itself is quite small and old any enlarging creates a pixelated image making looking at the area where the boy is unclear. Is there any software out there that's good for taking a certain area of a photo and enlarging it with less image loss than just using a standard photo viewer built into the Mac/PC??

Here's the photo itself:

Have you tried finding out who owns the copyright/slide/negative, or at least the original print? As you would get a much better file to start with, plus it avoids any grey areas relating to copyright, as if you did this with a recent image there would be uproar...

FWIW genuine fractals is the best upscaling software available, but it isn't cheap £100+ and you need Photoshop £500+

You'd probably be better off contacting the website to ask if they would be so kind as to send you a high res scan.

Hi,

I had contacted the website owner who also owns the image copyright itself and he was fine with me using this image(I just wanted to clear that up before anyone on here pipes up about it) ;) Sadly the original image is no longer available as he lost the photo and several other's in a house move and he only has the image on his site and not the actual scanned jpeg file anymore(which would have been ideal)

Is that the biggest version you've posted, or have you shrunk it a bit for the forum?

I've got Genuine Fractals, so can have a go if you want?

really can't see you getting anything more than a blob of shorts, a blob of white top and a blob of head I'm afraid...shame the original has been lost, or you'd have had a waaay better chance :(

Here is a 100% crop of the image linked by NinetyEight (very slightly bigger than the one you e-mailed me) upscaled by 500% in Genuine Fractals.

You can't make something out of nothing, the detail is lost I'm afraid. :(

Like some clever person said when told "You can't polish a turd" replied, "Yeah, but you can roll it in glitter."

I wasn't going to bother posting it, but as I said I would try before, I thought I'd stick it up here anyway! :bonk:

The limitation is going to be the original. Photographic paper was never designed to have a high resolution so you may struggle to get a really decent enlargement out of it.

Mythbusters showed you can actually polish a turd.

Hi,

Thanks for having a go, I guess it'll remain a mystery as to whether that picture of the(assumed little boy in it) is my dad after all.
