Hi

If anyone has followed a couple of threads I have posted in wherein I have mentioned I am converting my garage/workshop to a photo hobby space and studio. Have been clearing loads of stored "stuff" which has made its way to the dump.

This evening my mate and I got futher in and tucked away in a cupboard I found 3x 5 roll packs of Fujicolour Superia 200 135-36.

The date on each states a use by date of 08-2006

I had forgotten that (from memory) I had bought 5 packs and had only used 2 rolls. I had not been happy then with the results and had not used them. I fully expect to find the remaining 8 rolls tomorrow.

So my question is, and bearing in mind that these films were in a space very cold in winter and very hot in summer, whether they would be viable to use?

In the past I always refridgerated film stock, especially Fuji 50S slide film.

I intend to load my dependable Pentax MX with a roll and with my M 50mm f1.2 - will then have a go to see what appears This time!

Has anyone here tried film getting on for 7 years past its best before date? Especially film effectivvely thrown in a cold then cupboard? I think I had the film for over 8 years.

Any advice on under/over developing the results?

The cold won't be a problem. The hot will! The trouble with colour film is that the different coloured dyes degrade by different amounts over time, so chances are the colour balance will have altered. No harm giving one roll a try to see how badly it's been affected...

It will be interesting for sure.

Been a while since developing my own colour stock.

Will send it off this time!

Give it a go, can't hurt :) If the colours are all buggered you can always turn it monochrome in post ;)

Very true.

I will just go for dev and medium res on CD.

There was a photographer, sorry I can't remember who, that used to store some of his film on a radiator to encourage the bizarre degradation of which you speak. I remember going to an exhibition of his work, probably the Photographer's Gallery back in the 80's. This was obviously before the days of the Lomo crowd, but it did produce some quite interesting variations that would be now regarded as Lomo-esque.

I loved the Photographers Gallery in those days.
My group would meet in there, enjoy the events then off to the Sussex Arms on the corner of St Martins Lane and Long Acre.... memories!

I'd shoot a roll at ISO100 and see what you get. Probably won't even be *that* bad, apart from grainy.

I shot an ISO800 roll which was around 10 years out of date, metered at ISO200 and it was fine. Colours a bit off, pretty grainy, but given it was fast colour film that had been many years expired - it's fair game.

Cheers for that.

Will follow that suggestion and perhap do a control roll at original ISO using one of my other MXs.

Stiil emptying my garage workshop tomorrow so will be during the week when I can get out.

Had to edit that, oops, my auto correct (on a tablet) got the ISO wrong - I shot it with 2 stops overexposure, so ISO200.

I am out of practice on the ratios.

Am thinking of trying a spread of settings myself. Nothing to lose except the cost of dev + CD!

Update

Have started on the first roll......

Might do 2 over the weekend.

I did this with a roll I found in the cupboard. Came out allright, varying shades of tobacco but it worked! There's another roll I found in a camera in the same cupboard, I started using the camera but it died after a few frames and now I need to extract it and continue shooting!

Good news re your results

Was thinking of putting some on the freebie thread depending on results!

Give me a heads up if you decide to rid yourself of some of it, I'm always up for a laugh shooting ood stuff. I couldn't stop giggling every time I shot something with the now buggered cupboard dwelling olympus!

Will do

Not sure on whether rules allow for the actual giveaway on this thread or it must be the freebie thread but will anounce it here in either case.

Probably best to stick it in a Classifieds thread of some sort.
