I have just installed a ciss system on my Canon printer. The problem I am having is that Fotorite ink and Ilford paper are not very good together so I have been told. Why this is I have no idea. The colours are washed out, shadows area appear green and fine detail is missing.

I know I can buy another profile for this combination of ink and paper, but has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it. Or is there a more suitable photo paper to use.

Mick.

I tried this combination and others and in the end gave up, remember fotorite ink only claim to be within 10% colour accurate compared with Canon which for me is not good enough plus I got a lot of clogging issues. Ive now changed back to Canon inks and paper and all is perfect! (shop around for the inks you will be surprised what you can get a set for). Perfect prints was what I was after and I could only get it with Canon ink & paper (unfortunately)

Ill stick to the 100% accurate method I reckon:)

mine is accurate. I make my own profiles. you can't expect to use a different ink and expect it to be the same.

Where do you get your inks from?

Also, Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl is awesome paper. Apparently, the gloss paper bubbles (from what I read), but the pearl stuff is way better than the Canon equivalent. They do their own profiles for you to download...

Hi cat d, I get them from 3 places best buy (priced matched with south west ink) and just ink and paper, ive tried ilford paper, but couldn't get the same results as the canon, I dont know why as I see others get good results and of course I downloaded the profiles, with the 3rd party inks I just found the colours to off base i.e pink lips etc which is no use to me, also you seem to have to clean the printhead a lot and eventually it clogs up. But I guess each to there own depends how accurate you need your colours, I read a post somewhere someone saying they got great results although there was a slight green cast...... erm ok if thats classed as a great result I guess its fair enough but not for me.
I have never brought from south west inks but whilst best buy price match ill keep going there :)

Yes I use a Fotospeed CIS with an Epson R2400 and various papers. I like the Smooth Pearl a lot and prints perfectily with the correct CUSTOM profile.

Mick the important thing there is CUSTOM profile. Whilst you may have a generic profile these are often not accurate.

I suggest using a paper that allows you to get a free custom profile (Fotospeed and Permajet do these with their own excellent papers).

I also use Permajet Oyster (Ultra Pearl), Foospeed PF Lustre and they are superb. Fotospeed pigment inks are every bit as accurate as my Epson inks and I'd not dream of going back considering the savings I make.

With an Ilford paper you may need to purchase a custom profile but you should be able to do that - there's a number of places offering these.

I do my own custom profiles with my Colormunki and love it. Even my laser prints accurate images with its own profile :)

Chris - I've had no issues with the Ilford Gallery Smooth Gloss. Only issues I heard was the use of the Ilford Classic papers using pigment inks.

Who told you that Mick? Do they have a custom profile or a generic one? That is CRUCIAL to accurate prints.

All good info from eos jd, if free ones dont work out, these guys do a great service with a money back promise if not happy.

+1 on that. I was quite happy with Canons semi gloss until I put a few sheets of Gallerie Smooth Pearl through the printer. Fantastic detail and colour.

pigment inks just sit on the top of the paper unlike dye which soak into the sweallable layer

Yes, some papers suit pigment inks and some suit dyes and some both. You should make sure your paper is suitable for the ink set you're using.
