Fortnightly Assignment; MONO (Discussion)

KIM: PP -wise it's a little grainy (maybe intentional) and could do with some levels and curve to bring out the background detail. :)

Thanks Sammy - useful crit. I've run the pic through Neat Image and its cleaned it up a bit. Also tweaked the background a little with a curve to bring out the clouds in the sky more.

Very clever Rog ;)

BTB ... it is inconsequential but shot was taken using the Maplin thingy we've been discussing in other thread recently ! :thumb:

Does good job but needs practice ... as you can see on my part ! :smilenod:

Thanks for the comments sammy...I wanted to do it in the first place but wasn't sure whether to or not, as I didn't want to over do it, anyway took your advice, what do you think?

If some of you are wondering where this picture is, it's of Newstead Abbey. The reason I chose this pic from the others in the end is all that's left of the actual Abbey is one wall, on its own (mono) if you know what I mean.:Ponders:

Ok, attempting to continue my thoughts of the shots:

Hmmm, not sure about this one. Something seems to have gone wrong in the conversion or processing. I think the levels are too close i.e. the greys are far too similar losing detail. Maybe have another attempt at processing?

Just my opinions obviously. :)

:D ive tried in vain sammy!! lol :banghead: im beginning to think i should have went for a different shot but im too busy this week to look at anything, ahh well! thanks for opinion!! :thumb:

Now that's much snappier! :)

You should submit this to critique, you can then let others attempt to show you how far you can go (or not in some cases).

No problem Steve. I think the photo could be fine its just something seems to have got messed up in the processing leaving you with an image that has no white or black in it, just middle greys.

Getting there ;) Much cleaner now, but I still think you can go further on the curves/levels side of things. But it's your photo and if you are happy with it then that's all that matters!!! :)

Thanks Sammy appreciate comments, I'm happy with it now you can see the lichen on the rocks and also see the mist in the valley. Putting in more tones to the fells darkens the rocks at the foreground. I wanted to take the viewer through the tallest rock to the valley behind, and up helvelyn to the snow. :Ponders: I think.

Kelticman...your image is coming along great!

The real trick to successful monochrome conversions (to me at least) is selective contrast enhancement.

'One click' across the board solutions very rarely work successfully unless you get immaculate lighting at time of shooting.

Bring out the luminance in selected parts of a shot, especially landscapes and your'e onto a winner.

BTW... there's a great alternative to the traditional PS dodge and burn tools to bring out detail in the shadows.

Create a new layer above the image by holding down the ALT key then clicking the new layer icon on the layers palette.
This will open a layer dialogue box where you can select the blending mode. Set that to 'overlay' and tick the tickbox that then appears for 'fill with overlay-neatral colour (50% grey).
This will create a new layer filled with 50% grey in overlay mode.

Use a low opacity soft brush to paint on that layer...white will dodge or lift dark areas, black will burn or darken areas. if you make a mistake, create a 50% grey foreground colour by clicking on the foreground colour pallete and in the colour picker menu that appears and where it says H, S, B:
enter 50% in the 'B' section and paint away your mistakes to restore the image.

You will be amazed at how much detail it can lift from the darkest of shadows. If there's any detail there at all, this method will bring it out.

The shadow/highlight tool applies the effect across the entire image which is not always what you want and the traditional dodge and burn tools can look patchy and over-processed.

You may need to protect the areas around the detail you are bringing out by masking it with a selection.

Try it peeps...it's a great tool!
I'll be adding a video tutorial on this in the near future ;)

It always god doing these thing via layers as it means you are not modifying the original image and therefore losing information.

Nice technique there Bachs, I shall give a whirl next time! :)

Working 7 days a week doing up next house & covered in plaster dust most of the time, so no DSLR near that Sir.....so it will have to be a conversion of archive for me.

Superb entry Noah...
Textbook stuff for me and an ideal candidate shot for monochrome.
Simple composition, great range of tones and good use of lighting. :thumb:

thanks bachs, very kind of you to say so. i was a big fan of yours too, lovely range of tones and strong comp.

i did think hard about how i could use yesterday's rain to good effect, and i was borrowing my friends 10.5mm fisheye. i spent a while down there and took some time to think about the lines and perspective and thats what i came up with :)

swiftwind: i really liked your entry, its very striking with good focus and a nice balance of detail and high contrast.

A lovely lot of entries and a great standard again! :thumb:

I'm going to pass on this one. Not felt like picking my camera up lately.
My Mother passed away in the early hours of Monday morning after an illness that had her admittted to hospital a week previously.

Too much going on in my head to have room for creativity.... not just because I don't 'get' most mono shots.

I do like most of the entries so far though ;)

Sorry to hear about that.

Thanks.

I know the members here well enough to know they will all share your sympathies. I don't want to turn this into a condolences thread and take it off topic. I know you all care so I may start another thread later with more details.
Please keep this thread to assignment comments.

This is going to be a real toughie to vote on this time.
Some superb conversions and compositions. :thumb:

Good luck to everyone who entered!

Well its been almost two weeks since we started this one, is everyone happy with it being closed tomorrow at say 20.00, so that voting can begin. That will give anyone who hasn't entered a chance to get something in and anyone who wants to change their entry a little more time to become certain :)

thats fine by me, i was going to let it run till sunday but we got a lot of stunning entries already!

its ghandis fault:p , he was premature again:shock: (insert premature joke here)

Mr THX I dunno if you realise but your pic is marginally over the size limit at 337.84 kB

Nope it's just that I am stuck with peasant-speed 1Mb broadband at home and your pic took a few seconds to download ;)
