After reading Woadrage's suggestion on the 'Street Photography' thread, I thought it seems as good an assignment as any, so here we are ... Street Photography!

Let's see how many of us scaredy cats can pluck up the courage to actually get our butts out there and bring back a snap for the thread.

As this is purely for fun, might be a laugh to post near misses & downright flops here too.

As usual, dont forget that when you post a pic, you must comment on the previous 2 pics before you! (if there are any). :)

Like many I admire those that can do it. Not sure if I can.

This was from a day out yesterday to Portsmouth. Taken in the Spinnaker Tower high above the harbour. Although appearing to take just the usual shots I was on the look out for candids - but I didn't stand out like I might in a 'street' :)

It's a long way down....

What a fabulous view Robert, though thats one helluva high street ;) The ladies dont look they were too aware of you and your camera - or they were too busy combatting the vertigo!

Heres mine, from saturdays london trip, or more accurately, from the drive home. By lunchtime saturday, driving through camden, it was of course mad busy. Whilst sat in the queue [stationary I hasten to add], a guy on the pavement was selling those things that make huge bubbles. I grabbed the camera to try and get the bubbles, but failed...and failed at getting the people too, so there ya go, street photography phlop!

Not so much street as seafront... This old couple had been wheeling around for a few minutes when they finally stopped and I snuck up on em

Clicky the photo for bigger.

We all seem to have taken the cowardly option so far. Someone must post soon doing it properly

Shame those bubbles don't stand out a bit more LL. Like the way you can share their view of the sea UncleR.

Here's one I snapped in Plymouth.

Cowardly?! Old people are viscious!

Completely agree with that one
Excellent & unusual image

I like the the divisions in the image in Moglets photo (the black rectangle on the right could do with being cloned out as its quite distracting  ) Nice image overall though

hope this one counts ok for my one, random guy at a local rugby game, just asked him if I could take his photo & he said he gets asked by photographers all of the time :) Was just a quick snapshot as my lift had just arrived & I had to run to catch it :shake:

    love thatone Mike and pp is excellent, what a character-full face!!

Now I am not sure if this counts, but as we are a bit thin on the ground in here [yes, we are all shy I reckon ;) ] I thought I would add it anyway. Taken last night on my phone, as we were going into a TV studio so no cameras were allowed, but there is nothing quite like the great British Queue!!

Its not totally 'street' I suppose, and I cheated by using a phone not the D70s, but best I could do in the circs, and was at least an attempt to get something.

Here's another from Rome. He's one of the gazillion african street vendors.
Looks a bit bored, but overall contented, doesn't he?

Already commented on moomies pic (in its own thread)... it's a real doozie of a capture of a real character

LadyL.... hmm. It's definitely street 'togging but nothing stands out that much
We only learn through trying... keep it up

I know, the minute I waved the phone around, they all turned away... horrible horrible people. :(

I am wondering whether to stick a battery or 4 in the daughters kodak compact and head into the west end for an evening....except its piddling it down, though that is all the more reason to use the compact instead of the DSLR, plus I am trying to get my 'less than motivated in anything' girly to find an interest, perhaps getting her to help is an idea....hmmmmm!

Damn this street photography lark - but strangely, I am now determined to get something worth while, it can't be that hard, surely! :suspect:

I shall get back to you.... :naughty:

I know this is not upto the standard of the above entries but I have just taken this out my window, camera resting on window ledge. Taken at 3 secs @ F3..any comments grately appreciated

Gsansome - well its a street and its photography :D ! The trails are fine but I'm not sure it really works for me - looks a little 'random' to me.

Yodsasarmpit - interesting shot that makes me wonder: who is she, where are they going, what is she so animated about - yes I like it!

Mine is from my India trip in Feb, so not taken for the thread I'm afraid, but comments welcome :D

Here's mine. I couldn't let this on pass but was nervous as h***. So I sat on a bench opposite rested the cam on my lap and pressed the shutter. :bonk:

GSansome, Light trails is something else I'd like to try. Nice image.

Yogasarmpit, Looks like shes talking to herself. Didn't realize at first there were two of 'em.

I'm drawn to the india shot, nice one like the gritty style, the colours, tone... and richmond.. well done, how do you feel now you're no longer a street photography virgin?!

I've taken a few recently but can't find the one that had people in it, hehe - got loads without people! So here's one I made earlier...

(Click the image for a larger size)

It's one of the main streets in Venice leading towards Piazza San Marco. Unfortunately, lack of tripod and lack of light made this quite a blurry pic, but I still kinda like it.

Richmond - interesting! Nice puzzled expression on the guy's face, hehe.

db247 - very nice capture. I like holding hands ^.^

db247, very...errr.....different

WP, I kinda like it, you can see theres a pic in there screaming for a tripod ;)

Well, I tried again today. I realise I need someone considerably more garrulous than me for this street photography lark. So, first of all I used some rather easy models....

streetpeople.jpg

I then tried some unaware ones... :naughty:

I actually got a far better version of this, compositionally, but its a bit noisy :(

See what you think, noist but I think it works better....

FB I love that second one. I feel a bit scared by his gaze!

LL I think the manequins are cheating! But I love the pic. And I also really like your DarkStar for some reason the man's actions with the Bollywood poster really works.

Ok this wasn't taken for the comp but it was my first ever go at walking up to someone on the street and asking. It has massive camera shake!!!

Wow! theres some real quality shots here now.

LL ... I just love your 'models'... they remind me of a colourful version of the old Ah Ha vid 'Sun always shines on tv' :D

Renee & moomike, fabulous characters

Adam ... love that lorry driver/mirror shot!
He looks none too happy though ... I hope your get away was swift! ;)

I am aware that the next assignment is due and I have a topic ready .... just thought Id give this a little longer as its great to see peeps coming out of their comfort zones!

WOW, Some fabulous stuff in last few hours.

FB, The mirror shot is excellent and a little scary. Oh, An I know the feet were a prob which is why I prefered the second shot, but it was my best effort of real people

I think the guy with the halg beard was either very drunk or definately enjoying his moment of weirdness, great capture despite the camer shake

Rene I love the man with half a beard  what a character and a great capture

LL the couple standing outside the coffee shot are 2 great shots, the mono really works for the shot. Just noticed that the 1st of the 2 needs a bit of a crop or a clone from the bottom right corner.

John, I really like the hi key effect in your shot from India. What was the guy on the scooter looking at?

Three from me if that's ok. All taken at The Oracle in Reading

Ok, 2 from me as this theme is right up my street :coat: I've just finished a street photography project for college so thought I'd stick some of my shots in here. I'm getting braver! The old guy was just sat on a bench, so got a crafty candid of him, and I actually plucked up the courage to ask the younger guy if I could take his picture for my project. They are scanned photographs as they were shot on film, so please forgive the softness / noise.

street2.jpg

Grendel: I love that first shot - it's a nice, natural, carefree shot of girls being girls and having fun

Renee: Very brave of you - it's not easy and takes some guts to approach people. Shame about the camera shake, but good capture of a strange looking man

I like the first one mini, he looks sort of worried and amused at the same time. Definately one i keep changing my mind about on what he might be thinking.

Second one is ok, but I think the scanning has taken something away that I feel sure was on the original, just not sure what

I like to do street photography when I can. It is increasingly difficult in this country as people I find are incredible camera shy, not so in Asia. Asian people in general love to have there picture taken IMO, especially if your share the image with them, much easier now since the advent of digital,

A face full of chrecter and stories, well captured, like the mono.

I like the shots but the tonal range is a little off, could do with a little boost in contrast IMO, the second image in particular is lacking in contrast and would be much improved.

Just a shame you could not have added a little fill flash to lift him from the background. Nice shot though.

"These shot taken in Oxford, city of bikes"

Dunno about that - weren't as many bikes there as Cambridge!!

Nice shot that is Andy, nice job of isolating him from the background  (gotta love the trainers to go with the shirt & smart trousers )
