OK first attempt at this. It's not a great shot but the light just demanded an attempt at selective colouring. C&C please:)

Edit.... have looked at this on my work pc and it's soooo dark!
Do I need to calibrate my monitor at home:thinking:

If it's really dark to you please let me know ta

Very dark that is Mark, but I do think that it works that way - the light really stands out & I'm not sure that it would if the image was lighter

Thanks for the comments. To be fair it was pretty dark when I took the picture so it's no real surprise. I just wonder whether increasing the light levels a touch may bring out some of the detail in the picture... might have another play with it.

I realise that, with assignment 12 up, this is probably over now, but as I've never posted a photo before, and with currently only sporadic access to a proper camera and therefore having very few photos upon which to draw, I thought I'd post one of the few I do have. Hope people don't mind!

From the ones I've seen so far, the most striking for me are mullrallyesport's car one above, and the phonebox in the winding street at the start of this thread ... really making the subject jump out, but without being "fake", if that makes any sense. They seem almost to convey a possibility that could happen in real life given appropriate light.

Anyway, here's mine ... was taken at my cousin's wedding (she's the one in the big white dress) a month or two ago.

I hope it's OK to post here without posting a pic - I don't have any images suitbale for selective colour at the moment (I totally agree with StewarR's comments)

With that in mind maddog.mark.... I really like your shot.

Depending on what angle I put my monitor it either looks right or too dark. It looks perfect to me when there is just a touch of detail in the bottom of the line to the right (where the wall/fence meet the road). I think this is one of those times where a print will really look great.

Thanks Simon, I appreciate your comments. I have printed a copy (only 6x4) and if anything it's slightly to light:bang:. I guess that calibrating your monitor with your printer is important after all:bonk:

fortunate little leaf (was actually red too)

just to keep this one going

dakid: really like it...would be good to have the pressies in colour too though so it looks like the little kid gave them to the bride? would be nicely balanced then.

lady pitstop: i'd like that for my wall :)

Yup! 3rd & 4th post in the thread :)

Thanks Inaglo, very helpfull as i've just done my first colour selective shot.

Nice shot maddog.mark, looks good and not too dark

Below is myself early one morning as the suns rising, bringing out the colours in me. What do you think? is it too much?

Thanks glad you liked:)

You look prepared for the day ahead to me:lol:

i love selective colouring pics, so here is my first post. It was taken on the hills at the back of yorkshire scuplture park, strangley there was no kid to go with this bike, it was just on its own abandoned, if only i was a bit smaller i would have ridden it down the hill, stabalizers and all :)

Can i also comment about "djs" pic, its a really origional idea i have a lightning lamp in my room and have often tried to get some good shots of it, but i would never have thought about selective colouring the result.

Love this thread though its given me loads of inspiration

taken at a party, she enjoyed being 'shot' so to speak..
c&c welcome, the only thing I'm not too happy with is the background, hence the tight crop..

Here is my first ever post on the forum, so please be gentle with me! This was taken a couple of years ago, but is one of my favourite shots of my dog. It was taken on my now very ancient Kodak digital camera. He was sat at the top of the stairs, and I just couldn't resist plonking the hat on his head and taking his photo! Unusually for him, he stayed put, and just left the hat there!

Great, MrGrumpy! You got the principle down pat. Imo, the B/W is a bit on the heavy, moody side. But that's a matter of taste, of course.
I particularly like flick5848's hubcap, and hacker's sunglasses, for the subtle application of the technique.

Here's another attempt:
