After viewing Runner10's images here
I came to the conclusion that it could be a bit of fun to pull out the old Selective Colouring shot!

So as usual, do your worst ... well try your best actually, and dont forget ...

rules
If you submitting a photo, please comment on 2 other photos in the the thread, one of which should be the one preceeding your post .....Unless you're the first person posting of course.

Could anyone give me some guidance in how to do this technique?

In the past i have used desaturate followed by history eraser. Is this the best way?

Cheers.

Anth.

There are several ways inwhich to do this.
The way I do it is...
Open a picture in PS, make a copy layer, desaturate ... or make your image mono with your usual proceedure, then take the eraser tool and with a small brush, carefully rub-out the area that you wish to be colour, flatten layers and save! :D

Hi all,

This is my first time getting involved in any of the challenges, but I had this image that seems to fit the theme. :)

Hi all,

This is my first time getting involved in any of the challenges, but I had this image that seems to fit the theme. :)

Lovely!
I really do think that the colour of the eye lends itself well to this process!

Here's one of mine that I took in Westonbirt last year.
Light was awful & the pics came out pretty naff, so it didnt hurt to play.

Looking at the pic now, I think it could lose quite a bit from top or bottom ... and I guess for those who cant stand this process ... a little from the middle too! ;)

The cats eye is stunningly simple but great.
The red leaves are good but, I might have left the ones on the right greyscale.

Here's my effort :) Gave it a little bit of green undertone.

InaGlo - really pops out at you that colour, I don't mind the leaves on the right hand side being colour as well, sort leads you the central ones. ;)

ajophotog - like the green tone to this, especially with the yellow.

Here's mine, taken at Port Isaac (where Doc Martin's filmed apparently!) The sky was a bit bland but I like the winding road.

Ajophotog - that is stunning! Works well with the slight green tone.

LP - again, I like it. I can just imagine standing there and taking that shot, and the subject you've chosen works very well.

This isn't much compared to others in this thread, but my attempt...

EDIT: Oops, got LP and Puz confused again. Your avatars are too similar! :D

Lady Pitstop - love the shot, classic selective colouring!

PSMeg - that works really well - takes a moment to realise it isn't a normal photo.

I realise leaves are already in here, but this was the only red leaf on the pear tree in my garden and caught my eye:

Wow... these photos are stunning - you have all given me the inspiration to have a go! thanks x

Foggy - Very nice use of colour

Lady Pitstop - Really really like that :clap:

All very good so far.

Here's my attempt hope you like it

My first attempt at selective colouring.:D

I like yours Ewan, butterflies take SC very well.

They are all nicely done though.

Flick yours is an imaginative and unusual take on SC.

Good work chaps and chapesses.

Erysimum.jpg

Susane - Lovely shot, the yellow draws my eye right in.

Foggy - I think that looks fantastic

Flick - Unusual, but it really works for me.

My attempt (sorry about the poor photo, but I took it when in traffic from the drivers seat of my car!)

Driving through Wetherby today and 500 odd of these scooters came through!

Put the camera on rapid shoot and thought this one might work with selective colour.

P.S. I was stopped when taking the photo, not driving ;) :D

This is a winner in my opinion... very well executed.

Hi there, I'm new to photography, 1st post too!

Flick - what a great picture. So simple and imaginative.

Musicman - I find my eye drawn into the room, and can alomst feel the atmosphere. Very nice. Was the meal any good though?!

Here's my attempt. Its one of my cats with a new toy, she loved it's unpredictable movement!

Lady Pitstop, this is a terrific take on the theme

psmeg, I have to keep looking at your take on the theme, great caption too.

tommo, look at the determination on your cats face, great selective colouring with the string.

Here's my take on the theme

Cheers Jemini,

It's one of those images that you take and think nothing of until you play around with some PP. :)

@tommo: I love your cat, she looks wicked! :)

Cheers

One from me, no where as good as the others on here, but thought I would try and enter the spirit of things and hopefully pic up some tips and guidance along the way :)

jemini - I like the effect, it really adds to the portrait

p3yrg - well done a great shot

Here is my effort, a couple of my little girls favourites

Some good stuff posted. I particularly like "eye on you" and the caterpillar. The Mod on the scooter made me smile

A couple from me

Ok I lied. More than a couple. I could do these all day... my kinda thing

Ladypitstop's red phonebooth is excellent. I like the way the road leads the eye towards the phonebooth.

I also like jemini's guitar boy. Clean and crisp photo. The boy has a lovely smile.

Hi David, a good shot but it looks like it could some levels adjustment to make it pop a bit more.

Oldgit, I really like your second shot.

One from a wedding a couple of months ago.....

And one from a concert last year.....

Probably too late to post but I will post it anyway cheers....Ian

BTW love the sunglasses. Not too keen on the wedding group? maybe just the crevates might work better?

Yeh I liked Psmeg's "Eye On You".
Also Jemini's pic. It works very well, and turns a normal portrait into something special.

I would like to know how OldGit got those leaves so sharp with the colouring?
Amazing!

Anyway, enough of my really un-descriptive comments.

Here's an edited version of the pic from one of my first posts on the forum.
I Edited it when this thread first opened but forgot to post it.

[edit] Now I've posted it, I can see its not much different from the original lol :embarrassed: Ah well. You can see the original in my gallery.
This was my 1st attempt, I can see its not perfect. The selection of colours went a bit wrong

WM_P9110204.jpg

WOW DJS, now that is some entry!!! classic, I love it.

Can I comment without posting? (I'm still new here... not sure of the house rules.) But I'm stuck away from home on a business trip without access to any of my photos.

Anyway, I think selective colouring is a deceptive technique. It's relatively easy to do, but very hard indeed to do right, because the key to it is deciding which bit of the photo should be coloured. It should be simple, it shouldn't be too big, and it shouldn't look like it was randomly chosen. Ideally, when you've done it, it should scream out at you that you made the right choice. Think of the little girl in the red coat in Schindler's List, for example.

With that in mind, I think there are two efforts here that are clearly head and shoulders above the others: Psmeg's cat's eye and Lady Pitstop's phone box. They are both outstanding.

Never ventured into here before, but here goes... (nervously after reading StewartR's comments ;)

Me, after reading StewartR's comments = retrospectively nervous and feeling firmly put in my place :D

I think the key word in this thread it " Assignment" not "competition"

The only winners are the people who benefit, learn and progress from the comments given.

Hey guys, don't take me too seriously! Who am I? Just a bloke with an opinion, who's trying to be helpful. Nothing here says you have to agree with me. Nothing here says I know what I'm talking about...

Heya I haven't ventured in here awhile but I had a pic I thought this might look ok on.

The race car looks cool in selective colouring but I'm not to sure about the composition. But hey they're moving fast so it can't be easy.

Keefter I love the yellow sign but I do find the blown out sky a bit distracting.

Well here's mine
1465468124_8805b115a0_o.jpg

tiler, I think that the big bobble at the top of the stem should also be in colour, but otherwise, thats a great shot.

Matty the bobble at the top is blackish anyway. Thanks for the comment.

Some fantastic shots! Really impressed.

So....whens the next assignment start :D
