hi all, i am off to fort william at the end of jan for a week, was looking for ideas of places to go and things not to miss in the area, hoping to travel over to skye and the glen coe area, thanks:D

There's a hotel in the centre of Fort William, I can't remember the name of it, but whatever you do, DO NOT go in there for a evening's entertainment - unless you enjoyed the acts they used to put on at the end of Phoenix Nights

Actually, I'd imagine most things there will be closed for the season at that time of year....

Dave, that can be a really lovely time for photography, the light is low and really rich. Of course the weather can be crap, but it's very unlikely it will be for a week. If the wind is from the east over Scotland, then the best weather will be in the west and vice versa.

Skye is gorgeous, go to Elgol for great views of the Cullins and take the back road going down to Armadale, it's single track and again has some lovely views.
Really, you can't go wrong on that side, nearer Fort W take the Connan ferry across and drive up towards Mallaig, lovely beaches, white sands of Morar etc, but remember there won't be too many of the country hotels open for lunch as it's out of season, although the one at Invergarry is excellent and friendly.

If it's snowy on the tops and you don't mind a bit of a drive, go over to Aviemore and up the finicular railway up Cairngorm, if the visibility is good, you can see for 75 miles!!

Also, if you have kids (or not!!) the wildlife park at Kincraig on the old road between Aviemore and Kingussie is excellent, they have just got a couple of tigers in a large enclosure as well as a shed load of other beasties....google them.

Hope that helps a bit, have fun!!

George

Closed? At the height of the ski-ing season, I beg to differ :) They want your money and they want it now. ;)

The bridge at Sligachan on Skye is very photogenic as are the surounding mountains

Hope you don`t mind me posting these.

Mark, from the light I suspect (and you'll tell me I'm wrong Im sure) that these were taken late in the day and buch later (or earlier ) in the year?
Early morning's good as well as the light is on the Cullin ridge then.
George

ps nice shots!

Glen coe, glen etive, rannoch moor, commando memorial, grey corries, ben nevis, glen nevis, neptune's stair case, glennfinnan, mallaig, arisaig, sands of morar. To name but a few. Skye is miles away! If you are going to Fort William there is a lot to see in Lochaber with out having to go to Skye.

Yup but it is stunning...

Try the ski lift up to the top of Anoch More - there's a restaurant on top and the views are spectacular. If there's a lot of snow about it's obviously likely to be busy, but the countryside all around Fort William is beautiful whichever way you head (Glencoe is close by) but be warned - the town itself is not particularly attractive.

Hi all
I know it's not my thread, but I will be in Onich for a week from 21st Dec :D just a few miles from Ft. William so thanks for the suggestions so far

Your right George these were taken in the evening (actually checking the inn for resaurant prices) and they were taken easter of this year. Thanks for the comment.

........we ended up in plockton for food, food was nice as was plockton....might be worth a look.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread too - I'm off around Scotland for my honeymoon in March and Fort William is on our list of places to visit.

The Nevis Range - Take the chair lift up and then after about a 15 minute walk you'll have views of Ben Nevis.

Glenfinnan Monument - On the Road to the Isles (Fort William to Mallaig) - there is a great viewpoint for the monument and loch. Also the steam railway & viaduct runs along the back.

And if you have time, the scenery on the Wester Ross Coastal Trail is superb (the coastal road heading north from Applecross)

Well, all of you coming up here, I hope you all have a great time, I'm sure you will. Just remember in Jan and Feb, we get a lot less hours of daylight than the S of England, this is good in that you don't have to get up so early for the "golden hour" but also means you may be setting off/returning in the dark!!

I was at the Glenfinnan Monument at about 4am one morning when on holiday in Fort Bill earlier this year - thought to myself ' lovely sunrise across the loch etc...' Waited and it came up all grey and dreary.. Bah!
One thing I missed was when pulling up to the car park there as a Stag right next to my car and my camera was in its bag on the back seat.. BAH!!!

Sands of Morar are very nice. There's lots to take pics of round Fort William. Enjoy.
