Formula 1 Goes to Donington

will be different id say

blimey! they better start work on the place then!
it certainly doesnt have the facilities for a grand prix

good news, though.. will make a nice change. Donington is much more exciting to watch from than silverstone.

i was just thinking the track in my head and my god it will make for a better race......... i wonder if they will change the track much? as for facilities they best get working as we all know what the British are like for taking ages to finish things

Well the rally good news is that the facilities will have to improve. I really, really hate Donington as a spectator, although the circuit is terrific.

What worries me though is that Donington is a real pain in the arse to get out of after the Moto GP, so without huge investments in the local infrastructure the aftermath of an F1 race would be awful.

Silverstone is far too "corporate" and doesn't have the character of Donington.

Should have taken it back to Brands, that would have been ace...

Steve

Just said similar on another forum.
Facilities are nowhere near up to scratch. In fact I've heard that Moto GP are considering moving away from Donington, due to the lack of facilities. Gettting out the car park is going to be a nighmare!!

They will have to change the track so much it will be ruined, just think of all the extra run off areas that will be required.

Can anybody remember the queues to get in for the Renault Weekends ? , imagine the roads from the M1 for a F1 race

??
Donington used to host the European round of the F1 GP? Did they have to change the track then?

The world wasn't as fast or safety conscious then.

All the run of areas at donington are gravel while on F1 tracks they appear to be tarmac

[/B]

hence why im going to book a track day there asap before work starts in my car

First lap, coming down Craner Curves. What a site that will be :D

Expect the run off's to be extended hugely there and end up a mile away from the track, the paddock there is just a joke, tbh after my visit i was surprised the MotoGP went there not alone f1, along with the chicance Melbourne loop run off to be massively extended, although id assume there wouldnt run the melbourne loop aspect.. Make a cracking to watch on the tv, but i fear Donington will become a nasty place to spectate from.

its "health & safty" meaning you like it - its banned

They are most definitely going to have to spend millions of pounds to get it up to scratch. The American announcers that I've been listening to during practice today have had nothing nice to say about the switch.

The are going to completely remodel the actual track so it will be nothing like what you see now. Shame really.

Tilke will rape the circuit within an inch of its life, all character will be lost from the track etc.

add that to the fact that they;ve probbaly got a timescale of around 18months to submit plans, carry out all the work required and get it inspected prior to the GP, id say theres more chance of balancing a dancing dodo on your head.

dont get me wrong id love to see F1 at donington, its a great track, however i think getting it up to f1 standards will ruin it

I really don't think it will happen, infrastructure is reasonably OK, M1 and A50 but getting the traffic in and of of these will be horific, remember alot of the MotoGP traffic are bikes !

As for the track, it ain't broke but it sure ain't very wide and could make for a great F1 race but as has already been said the outfield spectator area will have to be moved back - ach, I don't know, why not try for Cadwell, that will sort the men from the boys, lol :)

Whole new track and facilities required imo.

I agree with that totally. And all the other comments about the car parks and access in and out of the circuit. Its gonna be a nighmare unless major new road access is sorted. Also with such a large development of the track i fear the place is going to be ruined and loose all its character. Its a great little circuit but will be almost unrecognisable once upto f1 standards!

F1 will destroy it :(.

I'm all for improved access & facilities but the changes they'll do to the track for 'safety' will ruin it for spectators & other motor racing classes:'(

is that official that Tilke will be re-modelling it? please god i hope not.

anyway, screw all that. put them on the oval at rockingham. failing that lets use the M25 and keep the normal traffic on the road so they have to sit in traffic jams.

They should put them all back to gravel IMHO, if a driver goes off track he should be punished for it, and while we are at it make the kerbing on corners at least 24 inch high, they are supposed to go round the corners not keep cutting them.

They will never complete Donnington and the surrounding infrastructue in time - the whole thing is doomed from the off.

I just hope that when it happens the BRDC tell F1 et al to shove it when they come running back. Then there'll be no British GP, shame not.

Had a bad day?

do you reckon they will make Silverstone the European Grand Prix and the British GP at Donnington??

Had a bad day?

Lol :D

I used to like F1, but it's just become a 'big business' cynical money making machine, ahead of being a sport for the real enthusiast.

In my opinion, this is all a PR stunt so BE can make more money from someone, and has nothing to do with providing the British public with a better race.

Rumour has it that the "mystery backer" putting up a lot of the finance is a guy with the initials BE. If it's true then I'm pretty sure the work will be completed to standard and on time ;)

have to agree with everything thats been said visited silverstone early this month for the first time since going to watch barry sheene in 1977!!
Was amazaed at all the fences you have a 1/4 mile sandtrap and they still need fences the size of stalgag 14!!!!
on the plus side the parking and getting in and out much improved

:suspect: Its just all way too quick and sudden - its been a long and drawn out process for Silverstone to get their planning permission, and yet all this has been done and dusted at Donington? I think not somehow. Bernie is in this one up to his neck, as is Mosley, they are forcing someones hand IMO. I estimate Donny would actually have to close for a year in order to get it to F1 standards within 2 years, including the access, etc as well as new pits, extended track, extended run off areas, spectator stands and so on and that makes no financial sense at all :cuckoo:

i personally can see the MotoGP now going to Silverstone. that would make for a nice swap

after going down to the MotoGP i thought race day was horrendous and i wont go back

may venture down for a practice day in 2010 but we will see, only if things improve however

I think most on here know how I feel about Donington. It just doesn't have the facilities or the road infrastructure to cope, and I can't see it being any better than Silverstone when it's finished. It will take all the character out of what is, a wonderful circuit (I've done a couple of track days there).

But from a spectators perspective, the place is awful when it rains (and it seems to rain very often at Donny) and the grass car parks are just as bad. All of the car parks will have to be tarmaced, the entrance will have to be changed (that poor village suffers on Moto GP day, let alone F1), and a complete new dual carriageway will need to be put in. (probably off of East Mids Airport). Silverstone has great road links from 2 motorways, Donington has just the M1.

Ecclestone has been trying to get the F1 event away from Silverstone for ages - I think it's more of a personal thing than money. I can't stand the bloke anyway, he may have money but he's right ****** in my opinion.

sure it was something to do with one year he went via car and not the usual helicopter and it took him hours to get in, which put him off the idea

i must say i was expecting donington to be worse on the saturda i was there with the rain, parking was nightmare though i must admit
