Yes
Have the red squirrels at Formby recovered from the disease that the suffered from a few years ago?
would like to make the trip up just wondered if there's reasonable numbers of them there to make the trip worthwhile
Thanks:)

Hi there. I live just up the road from them.

Yes they have recovered their numbers. There are even stories that some of them have acquired immunity from the pox.

They are somewhat timid and haven't recovered their trust of us humans. If you go in the middle of the day you will see a few but you will have to be patient.

If you want to see a lot then set an early alarm. They are fed at 8AM and they know it. Get there at 7.30 and you will see dozens of them. They have gone by 8.15.

They are not all red. Some are black. This is due to some escaped Canadian squirrels that have bred into the local population.

Where/when are you coming from?

Thanks very much mate for the info sounds like they are recovering which is great
Am from north Wales hoping to come up in the next few weeks :)

Leaves are coming off trees now so if you pick a bright morning you'll get lots of light in there. I presume you know your way round?

Thanks sounds perfect :)
I haven't been before but assume that the feeding area is easy to find ?

Yes, it's close to the first car park. That is soon after the entrance. Don't go to the main car park; that's miles away and is full of dog walkers.
If you want a guided tour just holler and if I'm free I'll show you the way.
It is a National Trust property. This means you have four choices...
Join NT.
Get there early before the car park warden - approx 8.30 though later in winter.
Pay the car parking fee.
Park outside and have a longish walk in.

Make that five...cadge a lift in with an existing member!!!!

Thanks very much for the kind offer may take you up on it:):)
Would be great to see the squirrels we haven't seen them for years and didn't see any when we went to the lake district last September :)

Wouldn't mind paying for parking

Part of the problem in paying for parking is that there are more folk around. Lots have dogs and that just frightens the reds away. You will still see them, but they are just not as numerous. It's easy for me because I'm only 5 minutes away and can se them in and around the area but if you are travelling any distance you might feel a little cheated!

If you fancy a meet sometime just shout.

Oh I think I misunderstood the first car park nearest the feeding area is for national trust members only ?
We would be aiming to get there early tho hopefully :)

No. All the car parks are either pay or be an NT member. Once past the sentry tower you can park wherever you wish. There are no reserved areas.

Ahh I see thanks :)
Thanks again for your help the missus and me too are looking forward to seeing the squirrels :):)
