Formatting Hard Drive under Windows 7

Anyone any idea how I can format my hard drive running windows 7.
I've tried running the disc from starting the computer but that just runs straight into Windows.

I think I have some sort of virus that is stopping me re-installing windows from windows so I thought the only way was to format the hard drive and start from scratch?

The only way I can think at the moment is to remove the drive and install it into a second computer as a slave and format from there but apart from that anyone any ideas please. :thumbsdown:
 
As above, boot to the Windows CD and there is a section to manage the partitions on the drive, which also allows you to format the drive itself
 
Don't forget to get rid of the default 100MB additional partition that Win 7 automatically creates before you install. Google it... :thumbs:
 
hit f8 or f2 or del or whatever your bios key is before windows boots

either check the motherboard manual or bludgeon the keyboard on a few attempts (yes that works :D)

well that depends if you want to use bitlocker..

if not you can always remove it later too and extend your partition with diskpart.. to be honest i always forget about it lol, its only 100mb at the end of the day
 
You only get bitlocker with win 7 ultimate.

What BIOS does your pc have, it should show when it boots. On my PC which has an AMI BIOS its F11 to enter boot menu. You may only have a few seconds to get it right but persevere, you'll get there.
 
i dont get why people are worrying about a 100MB partition when most new systems have 1TB as standard lol

but easiest way to get rid after install is to do into disk managment and delete the 100MB partition, then go to a CMD prompt and type:

diskpart [return]
list vol [return]
sel vol x [return] (where x is the number of the C: drive)
extend [return]

refresh the disk in disk management and it should of enveloped the 100MB partition into the C: drive.
 
Thanks for all your information, need to get a PS2 keyboard now so I can tell the computer to boot from the cd as it's just going straight into windows again, and again, and again.................sod it I'll do it timorrow!

True, but that's what I call 'faffing' :D. Then again there's the opinion that it's not advisable to delete it after it's been created - far better to prevent it from being created in the first place. Pre-format and pre-partition and it won't happen.

Each to their own I suppose (or maybe it's the rebel in me that resists MS's influence :lol:)

saves reinstalling though if youve already done the windows install.. but like someone says above bitlocker is only on ultimate. the bitlocker service is pre set to manual but it might be worth disabling if youre deleting the partition..
