Anyone know the area? Booked a cottage for New Year week, looks like we might be getting frost so I could do with some hints on some good areas.

We're staying near Lower Bentham, right at the top end of the area - I know I'm right near the Dales but I've been there a few times before and wanted to explore somewhere new, rather than go over old ground....

Can't seem to find much online, above the obvious tourist sites and a photographer who doesn't say where most of his images are taken!

Any help greatfully received!

Hi Dave

Yes, that's one of the sites I've visited - I was hoping there might be a local or two who could let me know of any nice spots - not a great deal of tourist literature etc - not like the Dales or Lakes where you can see some ideas then create your own version...

Cheers

Hi

Ive been to the Trough of Bowland many times but dont know the names of places there in, theres lots of sculptures in the forest and river Wyre runs through it sorry I cant be more help,

I know the area reasonably well, what do you want to know?

If you are going to the trough ,if you continue through it on the road to Lancaster at one point you come to the panorama over the Morcambe Bay is pretty good, but if it's been snowing Bloody Fantastic.........But you have to be VERY CAREFUL on the roads m8 as the get treacherous.

Oh ,and if into Butterfly's go to the Ashton Memorial park in Lancaster ,there is a great Butterfly House there.

I'm at the northern eastern side -just wondering if people know little nooks and crannies near there...looks like the river through Bentham might be good from the OS map, other than that Stocks Reservoir looks promising...

Apologies for not answering sooner.

Stocks res is fine, but for birdlife on the res you are generally too far away, the woods around it are mainly forestry fir plantations, it is OK up there, but not a full day really.Dunsop Bridge,Bolton by Bowland, Newton are just three really old fashioned villages scattered about. The River Ribble has a footpath in this area called the Ribble Way, it does go over private land at times so you have to leave the river, I could give you some pointers on where you can see what in certain areas though........;)

Malham Cove is a must if you have not been before, also try to see Stainforth and Cattrigg Fosse, all in the Settle area. There is also a decent BOP place in Settle.I know they are all the Dales, but they are qute near you.

Edit.....top side of the res, where the Hodder flows into it, has a good selection of hares, bog owls ,snipe and woodcock, I *think* there is a public footpath up there, don`t quote me on that though, I can check if you want though?

Hi Fracster

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the OS tomorrow.

The Dales ones I know - been there, done that a bit...I'm more of a waterscapes and landscapes kind of tog - but love wildlife watching so the recommend on the reservoir will be good for evening time...

Cheers

Looking south onto the res, i`m sure you can do it better justice than I.

What about Ingleton falls, its only 10 mins from Bentham.

Not sure about the earlier suggestion of the butterfly house at Lancaster I have a feeling there isn't much butterfly action at this time of year from previous visits. Williamson Park is nice in itself though so could still be ok.
