Hi All - Just trying to find a bit out about selling my sisters Ford Mondeo ST220. Does anyone have any knowledge of these cars as it looks like I'm going to have to sell it for as she know even less than me about them.

The spec:

Ford Mondeo ST220 3.0 V6
2003
Blue
112k
Excellent condition

Here's the bit though, it's a Cat C right-off so no idea how that effects its value?

Any help or pointer gratefully appreciated

Thanks
Gareth

just a quick one a cat c should not devalue the care how ever because people frown upon that and sometimes struggle to get insurance this may affect the price

on a another note a lot of big engine cars are not as valuable now because of the price of fuel this a few things to take into consideration

if it was me go on to a ford mondeo forum and ask there i think that is the best way to get a true valuation there the people who know inside out of a mondeo

Cheers Alex. Yes I think you're right about peoples perceptions about Cat right off cars. I must admit, I'm not sure I'd buy one, although have no idea why really. I'll have a scout around the Ford forums and see what I can find out.

With any write off it all comes down what the fault was and how well the repairs were done - this is pretty critical really. If there is details of this it can make a cat C less risky.

But yea, what Alex said, cars with moderately large engines which are designed for daily use have definitely taken a value hit in recent years.

Yeah I agree. I think it's worth about £1200 tops, but just wanted to get an opinion from someone who know more than me. I have very limited knowledge of Fords.

well knot sure why i never thought of this lol my neighbour next door to my work buys and sells fords an specialises in them lol

just nipped to see him he said he wouldn't touch it with a barge pole due to the engine size

what he said works in our favour is that it is a st model if it has the full body kit etc etc then people will buy it if it just the standard you will sell but still stubble price would have to be right

i would stick it up at £1200 and see what happens from there
good luck

alex

ST220's hold their value but 1200 sounds about right. Register on STdriveRS forum. Someone on there will help. May even find a buyer.

Punch the same details as yours (roughly) in on autotrader and get a rough idea what others are going for. A very quick look I did on ST220's gives £2500 up to just over £3000 for 2003 models. With the Cat c "thing" I reckon maybe £2300 or less, depends on service history and stuff like that too.

I did the same earlier on and yes they go for half decent money, but with the Cat C hanging over it, the reduction will probably be subjective depending how worried individual buyers are. I reckon £1200 is a fair price based on what I can see.

Maybe stick it on (somewhere) for £1500, be up front about the Cat C, gives you £300 leeway to haggle then.

There's a model change in 2003 if I remember, is it a 6 speed box?

Probably not. The sad thing is, it's in really good nick for its age, but is just costing too much to run. She's thinking of replacing with an old GT TDI Golf for the fuel saving.
Good idea! I bought my A3 TDI because I thought Id get the same economy as a GT TDI Golf. What with it apparently being the same engine. Bloke I knew had one and regularly got over 60mpg out of it. Im lucky if I get 44 in the rush hour run.

Not going to make a massive amount of difference on a 10 year old high mileage car IMHO.
112k on a 10yr old car is fairly average. Spec such as 6spd gearbox may well matter to the buyer anyway.
Gareth if your sister likes the ST220 that much, she could always buy the diesel version an ST TDCi. Lowest I've had out of mine per tank is 48mpg and highest 60mpg.

Didn't know they did a diesel version. I'll have a scout on Autotrader and see what they are fetching in comparison to the Golfs.

Just a thought, but if it's a good car that she likes, might be doing a bit of maths to work out if she is actually saving.

Assuming she puts more money on top of the value of this one towards another car, at her average annual mileage/fuel prices/etc, will she be actually making a saving? I.e. If she gets a grand for this, and buys a diesel Golf for £5k, that extra £4k to buy an unknown used car could potentially fuel the Mondeo for a long time. Just saying it's worth 5 minutes with a calculator.

She's only looking for a cheap runabout to save money for a year or 2. She's been offered a 2002 GT TDI Golf with full service history with high mileage for £1300, so hopefully financially pretty much a straight swap.

There were huge differences on the 2003 model, the only reason I mentioned the 6 speed box was it's the easiest way to tell the difference.
