Simple question, Im shooting a football match on Saturday for the first time, Can anyone give me any tips and suggestions on settings please :)

Thank you.

Hi Daniel,

Might be better off putting this in the sports section. Knowing what equipment you will be using will enable football photographers to give you better advice too.

Moved to TalkSports for you :)

Thank you :), I was unsure where to post this sorry

what type of football.. kids/adults? what time of day daylight/night .. what lens have you got availble, whats your level of knowledge re your camera.. are you comfy with auto/semiauto/manual

general rule of thumb is to get a fast shutter speed.. so you set your aperture wide f2.8 if you ahve it...set your iso as high as your comfortable with.. then see what shutter is left...

again depends on the lens your using ..longer lens need faster shutter

give us some more info :)

I use the following with a 400mm lens Aperture 2.8 Shutter Speed 1/800 ISO Auto but set between 100 & 6400 However as Kipax suggest a lot depends on what gear you are using and what footy you are shooting. You would get away with a slower shutter speed if you were shooting kids football I also tend to drop to 1/640 on my 70-200 lens. When I first started out I used AV mode opened the aperture as wide as it would go and kept boosting the ISO as the shutter speed and the light dropped. Hope this helps

At least 1/640th shutter speed, and 1/1000th is ideal. Factor in your aperture and ISO to get that shutter speed. Shoot manual if lighting is relatively consistent across the pitch.

Im using a Nikon D7000 with a 70-300mm (sigma) I think it goes down to 4.5 or which ever it is.. iv found the weather out for the day and its sposed to be sunny so im assuming ISO 200, I think im going to shoot it on shutter speed priority so Im guessing 1/500?

Thanks for your suggestion guys. Kipax theres ya info ^^ lol.

I think i`ll have to play around a bit with the ISO though on the date, I guess its common sense really haha. I know my camera a bit more than average so Im not too bad with it.

Have to agree with Tobers, I would set the aperture to f4?, I think your Sigma is 4-5.6 and then up the ISO for your desired shutter speed.

I take it the game is an afternoon KO and even with a D300s and 70-200 2.8 there have been times where I've struggled for the right shutter speed.

Good luck Daniel.

Thanks AFC, I`ll just take some practice shots before hand but I`ll take down the settings suggested and go from there, thanks guys :)

What I would do for a 400mm haha. Theres a sigma 150-500 teasing me at the bottom of this page lol :(

What I would do for a 400mm haha. (

but then you would need a second camera as a 400 is no good in its own for football..although on a full frame shooting smaller people it can work if your lazy and cold like i was this afternoon... i put the 70-200 away and sat at half way line shooting the whole game on a 400...

what/where footy are you shooting?

Its for my local team, Irlam FC, I was asked by one of the lads, if I could do it. He said he asked the chairmen of the team and we`ve agreed on an amount.

The lenses I own are the kit lens 18-105mm, sigma 70-300mm and then a 1.8 35mm.

So I have to do with what I have unless someone who lives close to me is willing to lend haha.

so you ahvent done it before.. arguably havent got the right equipment and.. there paying you? thats quite a feat :)

Feat?, Iv not no, but once I have the right settings im sure i`ll be ok :D

Well done !!! I'm sure there are a few envious people of you getting paid for a job with the very limited knowledge you have. I wish you the best of luck...you have been given some excellet advice, I hope it pays off for you. Dont forget to post some images for critique in the sports section.

That's like playing golf with three clubs and still playing well if not better than having fourteen to choose from.

Done the 300mm or 400mm on their own loads of times, you just change the way you shoot the game.

Makes you think about the shot much more and what image your trying to achieve.

Thanks guys, its my first time so I`ll see how it goes =]

Mind and post some shots in the critique section
