Yeah basically contrast/brightness, crop and sharpern. If you haven't got the main focus, composition and timing in the raw photo you won't have much to play with. No amount of editing can bring back a sports photo really, it's about getting as much as you can in camera

Shoot jpeg, open in photoshop
Then unmask 100%
Auto Levels, Straighten Horizons, Crop and save 800kb
Few seconds per pic
Done.

Auto levels isn't always a great idea as it can change the colour balance too. If you're using lightroom you can apply the same adjustments to a batch of photos at once. In PS you could set up an action and apply that to a batch

Once I've captioned the image I open in Photoshop, crop then use the levels slider (if required) to brighten and add contrast at same time (never auto), sharpen and then as.

Lightroom is often too slow for many football togs, they often need to "wire" the pics back from the game (email now) a lot use Photomechanic.
You need to get it as near right as you can in camera, shoot jpeg (I know raws better but time counts here) and do as little processing as you can.

Think the most important thing a sport tog does is ensure the image is captioned correctly. Using a program like photomechanic means that images can have a template attached to the images on import from card and a little preplanning means code replacements can speed up id'ing and avoid captioning errors. Images can also be tagged on camera allowing to readily acccess images once they've imported to laptop. As far as editing goes cropping is the main factor as its possibly the only element within editing that can be controlled (colour correction is hit and miss crouched over a laptop on a sunny or rainy afternoon and picture desks would sort this anyway if the image is good enough) speed is the key hence most will shoot jpg and sacrifice the advantages of raw. next is wiring of the image and while some email many agency togs will ftp images which is more reliable than email. With 3G and wifi connections these days from shot to delivery should take about 3-4 mins max. Sorry if I've gone on a bit first post on this forum. cheers Dan
