Hi all,

In one or two words I'm after a lens to cover 4 days of football,

Intrested in what length you all use as I found 70-200 short. (Using a 7D)

Extra info not needed but there if you want a read.

I've recently been invited to go with a local team to Bulgaria around july 2013.

And will be following the team while they enjoy there Football holiday with access to a stadium and other extras on the side such as tour guide around the local town ect.

Now as the only two lens I currently own are 50mm 1.8 and 17-40 I'm going to be needing another one to add to the list!

Here's a few results from last April when I was hiring a 70-200 F4

Personally I found the 70-200 on the short side but then again it was also my first match I've ever been to in my life and ended up walking around the pitch snapping away.

Would love to hear what lens you all use and what lens ect so I can decide what length I should be looking around

Thanks

Camera - 7D

Most use 2 boddies somthing long (300mm or 400mm) on one somthing shorter on the other 135mm or 70-200.

If you only have 1 body then it would depend on what you are trying to capture. Players running with the ball, tackleing, aerial battles for the ball then the longer option but if your wanting goal mouth action then the shorter lens would be better. This is all considering your shooting from behind the goal line and on a full sized pitch.

If you're only taking one lens then try this.

This is a handy lens that I use if walking round a pitch. As long as its not a night game the lens holds up very well and can be used easily hand held on a 7D. Good for goal mouth action, close up and middle of the pitch stuff. I've even cropped in to the opposite end goal mouth action and still had a very useable image

Hi John, The pitch is full size and as I've never been to a " professional " pitch before starting to panic as it looks massive on tv!

I've only got the 7D and ideally wanted some action shots where I'm going to need some length!

Unsure what I'm taking at the moment as its passed my mind to sell my 17-40 to fund towards one or two lens but as much as that's a gorgous lens I don't think I'm going to be near that price range unless second hand.

Out of intrest what size pitch were you on ?

Thanks

I'd say look into Little John's idea of lens hire, there are quite a few companies who offer lenses for hire over periods of say 7 day, 10 day or 14 day hire, much much cheaper than buying an expensive lens for one event
maybe think about something like the Canon 100-400 L lens ? should be great for daylight matches in summer and at that time of year even an evening k/o you will prob still be ok first half then just shoot goalmouth stuff with the 50mm F1.8

Thanks for all the help, Will be hiring and will be deciding closer to the time depending on prices!

Happy new year!
