Following on from that other feller's "What kit to take" thread

So, we're going on holiday to the S of France for a week, staying with some friends who live there. Travelling in my MGF so I've been put on "not enough luggage room" watch. It'll be fine really.:bang:

But what camera kit to take? Well, it's not just me and a camera by mesel', it's the two of us and our very generous hosts spending time together (no vicar, not like that!) so it's a case of not being overburdened on the journey or whilst there. So,

>The Canon DSLR kit isn't going.
>Mamiya 645 kit isn't going - just too bulky.

Don't take any, just knock on Asha's door and borrow what you want.

I would take the LX3 without question in the pocket and you are never caught off guard.

I would only take one body and dependent on the weather and were you are going load B&W or colour for the day.I do not like 135mm focal length that much, so my choice would be 50mm f1.4 giving good light flexibility and again use your feet for composition and the 28mm for landscapes.

Definitely a 50mm and 28mm. Personally I'd also take the 135, but as Richard notes, not everyone likes the fov, so that's a choice for you. I'd also take some slide film, even though it's expensive. There's nothing like slide for hot, sunny, blue skies days! But also take some Ektar or Portra for the other days!

Oh, and I usually have a digital, so the LX3 sounds like a good plan - in my case it's usually the x100.

What I do is take a backpack as all you need is to get the equipment to your friend's place and back, once there just put your gear in a drawer and just use what you want for the subject for the day.
I likes lots of gear and my backpack weighs about 16 pounds when I go to Ibiza.

Smaller lenses will slip neatly into any cup holders that might be available. There are also (usually) a few voids in and around the spare wheel which could be filled with small boxes (films) and the like.
However, I would be tempted to treat the trip as a break from film and just take the digicam - it'll capture all the memories even if it isn't quite the same! A long haul holiday of a lifetime would need a different approack but the SoF isn't a million miles away so can be revisited relatively easiloy (and cheaply!)

LX3 gets a vote. One film body makes sense. I'm rolling my own b&w so I could load some 12exp rolls and load in the mornings...

If you could google "MGF cup holders" it would come back with "on the underside of the arm rest":bonk: but film under the seats etc.
What's this... leave the film at home? :shake::shrug::shake: I am NOT lugging the gripped DSLR and lenses. I could be persuaded on digi only but the LX3 is a wide angle lens...

Now then what's the going rate for hiring out kit?...............

I'd go for the 2xOM4 + 28/50 set, OMs are nice and compact anyway. Take a digi compact too. Last time I went on a week's trip I took my M4, Hexar AF, Rolleiflex MX and a Ricoh GRDIII. All of them saw use. The two 35/2's meant that I could shoot high speed b/w in the Hexar and slower b/w or colour in the Leica. The Rollei mostly did slides, while the Ricoh was for snapshots or short walks. If I had to do it again I'd probably narrow it down to one 35mm body (maybe even my X-Pro 1 setup actually), the Ricoh digital and a Rolleiflex.
