I mentioned this in another thread but thought i would start a dedicated one.

I was shooting some photos of a model using a selective photo point on her face and later found that it was miles out of focus.

To be honest I havnt seen that happen before, the only differences in the shot were that it was pointing into the sun (although at times it wasnt very bright), she was wearing a bright red wig and that I was using a big aperture but I wasnt that far away.

I am worried about it happening again because I lost a lot of good ones from that set.

Not familiar with your camera, Jamie, but it sounds like the auto focus has locked on to something in the background.
Can you focus on a subject then lock the focus so that if you move the camera to re-frame the shot the focus remains unchanged. If so that is how to avoid the problem. E.g. focus on the eyes then recompose if you want to prior to taking the shot.

There could be other reasons as to why they are not in focus... Do you have any examples? (with exif intact)

It's covered in the camera manual, a light shining directly into the lens can really mess with AF, it's a known issue with all AF systems.

Hi sorry I think my profile is probably misleading, I was using a D7000 in AF-S single selective point so I am locking it onto the subjects face.

The main thing I was thinking is that because the focus square is roughly the size of her face from a bit of distance, the red wig might be hogging the focus.

One thing I can definately do is chimp more and zoom in, just to check what's going on.

Back focussing issues?

It might be back-focussing but it's not the traditional d7000 back focussing because most of the time it is razor sharp and I have checked my lenses against a focusing chart before and they were bang on.
