So I went out for a drive earlier to try out my new tripod and filters. Although poor planning instantly put a big dent in my plans. The tide was out and despite the sun I did need a coat which I did not have, so this was just a quick play rather than a serious attempt. (will try later this weekend when the tide is in)

Firstly what do you think of my positioning of the grad? And is the foreground over exposed? It looks a little odd to me.

Secondly my lens could not focus on the castle keep when i tried to move the focus point with the curser I have also noticed in doors it struggles to focus on a wall. Is this normal? As i am still quite new the lens is a 15-85mm USM.

From a filter point of view your shot looks fine to me.

As regards focussing on the castle is concerned, it will be because the focus point in the viewfinder will receive too little light for it to work through the dark part of the filter. Focus manually or auto focus without the filter and apply the filter before taking the shot. The focus points depend upon light and contrast to operate correctly, so in the case of an indoor wall you may have a shortage of both if the wall is plain.

The 15-85 lens is a superb bit of kit, but it is a tad slow so it shows its weaknesses in poor light.
 
Thanks for the reply that makes total sense and stupidly I had not even thought about the effect of putting a filter in font of the lens would have on the focus. DOH!
