Just curious to see what some of you experienced guys use indoors when using off camera flash, when say in a room that has little light sometimes I struggle focusing, I have just started using pockewizards indoors and been using my canon 24-70 it's ok, but for future just wondered if there is any either technique, tip or additional light you use :)

It depends on the subject. If its inanimate macro work then turn on the room lights, focus (auto or manual, but switch to manual after focus lock achieved), turn off lights, take the shot.

If you use centre-point AF, it's very unusual for the camera (my 5D2 anyway) not to be able to focus if you find some light/dark transition to lock on to. Even in terrible light. There's always something - an eye, a shirt collar, botton, whatever - that's all it needs.

Some people use an ST-E2 just for the AF assist light, shooting in nightclubs and the like, or you could do it with another gun if you can block the flash. Or a torch, but I've never needed one.

Thanks for that gives me food for thought ;)

As long as I can see the distance scale markings on the lens I'm good to go.

Even if I can't see the markings I can turn the focus ring till it hits the infinity stop then turn it back a certain amount depending on the distance I want to set.

So it's not critical work then?

This was specifically for portraits indoors...;)
