Hi Guys,

How would you focus on a night shot where the light is limited?

Ie, shooting fireworks?

Also, what is focusing to infinity?

Craig.

It's difficult, I was struggling last night shooting a bonfire. Had a 50mm f1.8 on a 500d and at times it was struggling to focus lock and refusing to shoot. Got some decent shots in the end but had to persevere and use the light from the fire to get focus. Be interested to see peoples replies to this.

For fireworks you'd focus to infinity :D

Look on your lens, in the focus window there is a sideways 8 at the far end of the focus..This is infinity

For low light shots, if autofocus doesnt work, switch to manual focus.

I normally find it easier to manual focus when light is too low, and hope I can trust my eyes ;)

Even my first AF SLR (an F65) managed to AF accurately on fireworks as have all the other SLRs I've had since then (film and digital). As usual, the centre focus point seems to be fastest and most accurate. Even in the relative dark, I find AF to be more accurate than my attempts at MF using an AF lens, although setting to infinity and lettting a small aperture's DoF absorb the difference works well too.
