Hi,

My friend says he is having some issues with his kit, so I suggested doing the AA battery line up test in a 45 degrees angle to see if there is a front/back focus problem.

He emailed me this today :

Saw this on ebay :

What are you thoughts on this?

Worth getting?

Yes, that would work well. An important point is not to shoot at unrealistically close distance, not less than say 1.5-2m for any lens, and more than that for longer focal lengths. All AF micro-adjustment is a compromise and if you're too close it's possible to introduce an error at normal shooting distances rather than correcting it. The line of batteries is not a good set up. Alternatively, this is exactly the same idea:

It's only a ruler set at 45 degrees.

There is a free download of one you can print out and stick to card, find it at squit.co.uk/photo/downloads.html. Worked for me.

Small point, with some cameras it's possible (if unlikely) that the AF could be confused by straight vertical and horizontal lines. The ideal is a high contrast random-shaped target, such as the lettering on a cereal box. If in doubt, just draw a few squiggles on the target zone with a black felt-tip.
