Focus stacking query

I'm just trying to get my head around focus stacking and I've got a query. When taking macro shots for stacking using a focus rail, as I move the camera closer and closer the subject obviously fills the frame more and more, now, if I do it by changing the focus manualy step by step the subject does get bigger and bigger but does'nt seem to do it to the same extent. Am I correct or not, and how does the focus stacking software handle the different size images?

If you're changing the focus manually then the subject won't change in size just clarity/focus.

Are you sure you're not accidentally turning the zoom ring?

The image size will change using both methods , just make sure when you frame up the smallest file is big enough , its best to slightly over compensate slightly then crop if need be . The stitching soft ware has no problem handling the different sizes

Depends if the lens suffers from focus breathing or not.
