Focus stacking problems with D800 images

I've been having a go at some focus stacking and the program I have used in the past with my D300 CombineZP keeps crashing with full sized jpgs from my D800. If I reduce the resolution it will work ok but I'm not keen on having to do that. Has anyone experienced the same problem?
I've also tried Helicon Focus 5 and the output image is just a blank black image!! so it seems to have problems with D800 images as well.
Can anyone recommend any programs (other than Photoshop) they have successfully stacked full sized D800 images with? anyone tried zerene stacker does that work ok?
 
What is the spec of your PC? Do you have enough RAM & CPU power?
 
Could be down to the total size of all the images you are trying to stack is too big to be handled by the pc - how many images are you stacking?

You could also try stacking a few images at a time and building the stack up - I don't know whether that works, but it could be an option.

I'm only doing 24 images so its nothing excessive.


Thanks for the replies everyone I've now tried Zerene Stacker with the same full sized images the others failed with, and it has worked great.
These images were taken outside so there was some movement and it has aligned them and stacked them great.
Looks like I will now be buying the full version of Zerene.

Excellent result, Dale, and a heads-up to everyone that Zerene does the job.
 
Dale. Zerene stacker will certainly handle more than your 24 files, many more in fact. If you need any help with Zerene have a look at this web site www.photomacrography.net the chap that owns the site also wrote the Zerene program so it's ideal for any help you may need in the future. The people on the forums are from all over the world and are real top notch macro photographers so you can't really go wrong, and they are most helpful.

I've did one a few days ago with 140 full sized jpgs with zerene no problem at all, so I'm happy with that.
Thanks for the link I've just registered for that forum its a bit daunting though as there are some exceptional images on there, seems to be a good place to pick up some tips though.
 
You shouldn't be daunted by what's on there even though there's some very knowledgeable people on there they are all more than willing to help. The bits I've gleaned from the site are the only stacking info I have because I don't know anyone else that does stacking near me, even in the local club I'm in. if your at all bothered about your queries try asking your questions in the beginners forum.
As far as I can recall the largest stack I've done was 212 files of a Stag beetle that I bought from a entomology show I went to in Newark and Zerene handle those with no bother at all

Just come across your post regarding stacking and Nikon D800. I'm looking to upgrade my pc as my laptop is struggling on processing RAW files from D800. The spec you posted for your pc, is that coping with the huge file size from the D800 or would you look for something better?

I've no problems at all with processing my d800 files, I only shoot in raw so they are quite large.
I'm using lightroom 5 and photoshop cs6. I'd like to upgrade at some point but to be honest I cant justify it at the moment as I feel I don't need to. However if I was buying new now I'd probably go for a better spec machine just so that it more capable for anything in the future.
I recently did a stack of 120 images and it took quite a while to process those which was no problem for me as I rarely do stacks but if I were to do more I would seriously consider upgrading.
