It's another silly question from me. There's a road race tomorrow night near where I live. Don't ask me why I want to do this, just humour me and help with the settings. Thanks. I'm going to put the camera on a tripod and use a remote control to "shoot" the images. The runners will be turning a corner at that point and I'm looking to freeze the action. When I fire the remote, WHAT will the camera focus on? Nearest person? Fastest mover? Centre of the image? Sorry to be thick, I just want to see what happens but don't want to get home with 100 images out of focus.

In manual shooting you will be able to focus at a point in the corner. Set up before the race, maybe put a ruckscack on the road where you want to focus on, then just leave the focus ring alone!

... don't want to get home with 100 images out of focus.
Fair enough, but:

This is a classic way to ensure you get home with 100 images that are badly composed, cutting off the runner's heads, etc.

Why don't you just use the viewfinder? That way you'll know you're in focus and you'll know your composition is OK.
