Yes Beat it very hard with a big stick, and with luck I won't get up again.

Last Time I was in Solihull I ran out of petrol and though the locals were going to eat me walking back from the petrol station.

Hah I know what you mean, you must of not been on the nice side of Solihull.

If you think Solihull is bad you should experience some of the other areas nearby. Solihull is a palace compared to most of Birmingham.

You will all be safe enough at the NEC, no worries..

I'll be there on the Wednesday, mainly going to look at which camera body to upgrade to (not buying at show though)

I'm planning on going on Monday. I'm going to look at camera bags and insurance, its one of the only places you can get your hands on the equipment and check it out. I'm going to try to go to more talks this time.

That is the main reason for going in my opinion

I was hoping to go there on Sunday, if not may be on a weekday. When does it finish?

I'll be there Monday, probably throwing an epi at the thousandth person to whack me round the ribs with a 100-400mm.

Go and see Cliik, they always do a show discount of 10% on all quotes.

Can I Just ask. I am slowly getting into photography.

Is it a good show this? worth while going? It is about an hours drive from me. Just not sure what to expect.

Do you take your camera?, is it like a lot of shows, ie, stuff cheaper at the show?

thank you

If you are only an hour away and you are serious about photography, you must go. It's probably the best show in the UK and the sheer array of goodies on display is worth the trip.

Its apparently the biggest annual photography show in Europe
Went last year and going on Monday from the Isle of Wight
If it is only an hour's drive you have little to lose and it's only £10.00 entry - why not go - it's an experience that's worth doing at least once surely !
Regards
Rob

I'm an hour away too and I think its worth going to. I think of things that I may buy of the next year, you can see all the manufacturers equipment and compare. I'm thinking of looking at bags as I've yet to find an ideal one. The chance to check them out, open them etc is invaluable now high streets are getting less and less. It a great place to check over equipment.

I took my camera body last year and some stands let you try the lens, sigma is one such manufacturer. If you want to take photos then a zoom lens up to 70mm is probably the best, although you will see people with large lenses walking around. There are some things that can be got a little cheaper, there was a few 2nd hand lens/camera bodies for quite good prices but most are normal prices.there are a few talks about that are worth going to if your interested.

would anybody going mind having a look for the best Sony A77 & A99 deals & posting back or PMing me? thanks.

Calumet has some nice-ish deals on some new gear. I've only looked at Canon ones, so 16-35 II are effectively £909 after cashback (I bought one but it's faulty  ), 24-70mm II are certainly cheaper than elsewhere, 5D III - £2140 ish...

I went today. I think if you are an amateur then the biggest benefit will be being able to play with gear. Otherwise a lot of stalls seemed to be geared towards professionals. Esp wedding/studio photographers. There seemed to be no end of people pushing photo books, prints of various kind etc.

Calumet seemed to have some good deals, esp with refurb equipment but the queues could get a bit frustrating.

Parking is an insane £10 and a tip is to go pay at a different booth to all the other people. There was a huge queue at my car park but just next to the toilets there was a pay booth where the two guys were totally bored.

Have to say this sums up my visit too. I walked in from n5 car park right past an empty car park booth, perfect considering the queue for the car park booth and the bus were around 30 strong.

I mainly went for the d7100 talk, trying it out and having a look a bags, tripods, insurance etc. It is geared towards the professional, 70% attending were pro last year but the stalls are good. I was looking for a bag and ended up getting the one I thought was too small when looking on the net, really helps being able to compare them next to each other. One of the best offers I saw was a refurb d7000 for £500,not bad considering new is about £630 at present. Taking your camera lets you try out lenses too, always good if your buying new and can't in the shop.

Went today (Monday) as my annual trip to get an easy day doing 'research' for work ;)

It was noticeable that Jacobs wasn't there - the selling side of it deffo seemed less intense for major equipment, although my mate who came along made the comment that the show now feels like an exhibition of things to do once you've taken the image... There are far too many print-oriented exhibitors that hint towards the pro-portrait/wedding market. Actual hands-on testing of equipment seemed minimal, partly to do with the crowded atmosphere I'm sure, and partly down to the lack of major players and hose that were there having what seemed like minimal stand space.

I caught a semi-interesting talk from John Wright on the Nikon stand, talking about the move from stills to video, which was thought-provoking in places, but much of the practical photographic demonstrations were totally dumbed down and nothing you can't find out in 5 minutes on the internet. The speedlight talk on the Nikon stand was appalling. Much of the other lighting seminars were just running through what seemed like previous year's schedules. I couldn't be bothered with many of the software talks because of poor sound.

The place seemed overrun with paper and album stands and there was a massive lack of photos being displayed; there seemed to be massive eating areas that were there to fill up space not taken up by exhibitors. That space had stuff in it last year I'm pretty sure.

For a photographic expo, there was very little actual photography to look at. The little gallery in the centre that had GF William's stuff in it was tiny and almost seemed like a token gesture.

The corridors between stands haven't been improved, despite the lack of exhibitors. I got severely cheesed off with rude, camera-laden idiots who insisted on sticking lenses every which way, while dragging their suitacse-on-wheels behind them. I saw a bloke take a picture of a stand sign. A piece of me died I'm sure....

I did pick up LR4 for £50, with was something I'd needed to get, but as usual, Cameraworld was swamped (moreso this year I felt) and manners and queue etiquette seemed to go out of the window, with punters clamouring over each other to ask stupid questions to the staff behind the counter.

I liked the look of the new video-oriented Samyang lenses, with the built-in pull focussing gearing.

I woke up feeling rubbish due to a cold this morning so that didn't help my demeanour, but I've come to the conclusion that this once excellent show is now an annual focal point for the photographic industry to stand around talking shop, and for old people/bearded weirdos/men with penis envy to get in each other's way and letch over scantily-clad girls who I swear are shivering in repulsion every time these blokes massage their zoom lens.

One thing did cheer me up; when I was heading back to the train I took a photo (on my phone) of some great light coming in through a window. I was asked by security personal what I was doing. I told her, and she was okay with it in the end, but the irony of actual creative photography being questioned while pointless photography went on in a hall down the way, really made me smile.

I don't think I'll be going next year....
