Hi

Just a quick question for those of you who specialise in portrait work. Which focussing mode do you use in studio and for out and about work?

Thanks
James

Most of my pics are of my young daughters.
It's centre point with recompose and af-s. maybe not everyones idea of an easy life but works for me. I've been back button focusing for about 4 months now as well which has worked out OK.....i shoot 99% in aperture priority. Thats about it for my technique :) actually saying that, with flash i've started doing more manual....

No, your not being thick :)

My focus is controlled by a button in the back of the camera, in this case on the D90, the afl/ael button. This links explains:

Brilliant, thanks for that. I got my first Dslr a week ago (D3100) and have been learning the menus and options and could not for the life of me think of any good reason to use the AElock button for focussing. Having read that it makes perfect sense.

Every day's a school day :)

In the studio or outdoors I normally use AF-S unless there are young children/animals running around in which case I change to AF-C. Whichever mode I'm in I use single point focus and choose the one closest to the subjects eyes and then actually put it on the eye in question.

With flash in the studio I have the camera set to manual exposure, shutter speed at 1/125 and aperture depending on what the light meter says but typically that's f/8-f/11. When shooting in natural light I use aperture priority and keep the ISO as low as possible.

Hope that helps
