Focus assist light: On or Off?

I was just wondering whether most other people use the focus assist light? It's obviously there for a reason (i.e. to help with focussing in low-light), but has anyone noticed a huge difference? Personally, I turn it off to minimise the annoyance factor/distraction for my subjects.

If you have a Speedlight, use the assist on that, it's less annoying by far, even if not using the flash itself.

Or only turn it on when you need it, and it's a suitable environment?

i only use the AF assist on the flashgun..

Red beams are a lot easier to ignore than the flash firing... (For the subject anyway)
