Yes
So, I've been doing a few gigs now (mostly my sisters ones but you've gotta start somewhere and get practise) and I'm finding focussing is my biggest issue with the low light.

I know there's a few in there that can easily be trimmed out, but at the time my sister just wanted a lot of shots and she was happy with them all so they've gone on.

I know that on flash units, and some flash triggers you get focus assist beams that claim to be IR, which seem to be mostly just red light.

Please correct me if I'm being completely stupid about this, and tell me that this wouldn't work at all BUT..

If I were to get an actual IR lightsource, would that work to help focussing?
Something like an IR Krill Lamp.

If the way the focus assist works is completely different I'd love to know and be set correctly.

Thanks muchly

Matt / SINC.

dont know if it would work with a seperate light source, but its certainly very effective with the 430ex on my 30D.
and of course, you dont actauly have to be using the falsh , for the flash assist to work.
theres some pretty decent shots in your galleries too.
what kit you using?

Oh of course, but there is a big light signature from the assit beams on flash units / triggers. with IR lamps there is no visible light signature.

I know that it's minimal, but if I can avoid it then it would work out better at gigs to just slap a krill lamp onto me.

the problem is getting a very specific frequency of light

The red light is the edge of the IR band so they kinda come together unless you really really splash the cash on the LED's that are of a more scientific grade

you could allways add a visible light filter to the front of your speedlights IR emitter - exposed film works but. The issue with a filter is it will kill the power and range you get out

I had an idea of adding a hotshoe to the top of your camera that would trigger an LED light when the focus is being obtained.
Doesnt seem like there is something out there that does it.
