Focus and Recompose or Change Focus Point?

When I had a canon 5D mk ii I focus recomposed all the time as it was far easier than trying to line something up on one of the outer points, which had poor placement if I'm honest. It didn't really affect me too much though when I got use to it. When I went to nikon and had a D300s, the AF system on that seemed so alien as it would focus on any of the 51 points (which cover the entire view finder) so stopped focus recomposing. Now owning a D3, the trend continues of not having to focus recompose for 99.9% of shots I take and the 3D tracking is extremely useful for wildlife.

I use the focus points, I don't trust my hand movements to recompose, that being said the focus points on crop arent too badly placed!

If I have time then I'll manually choose my focus point. Same if I'm shooting stationary objects that are always in the same framing position.

For fast paced shots, focus and recompose. There is no way I want to be fumbling around with focus points in the middle of a wedding ceremony for example.

It does lead to a few missed focus shots especially at wide open apertures though.

Focus points? The little green box thingy on the dial on my 5Dmk2 takes care of all that rubbish so I don't have to think about it. Works a treat!

Alright, sorry, I'll stop being an arse now.

I've always been a fan of using the centre point and recomposing. There's no real technical reason for it (apart from the centre point generally being a bit more quick and accurate), I just find it a little quicker to do that for the kind of things I usually shoot. :)

Depends what I'm shooing. If I'm doing something on a tripod, chances are it won't move much and I don't want to faff about moving the tripod head so I chose the right point.

If I'm trying to shoot something else where it might/will move then focus/recompose. I'd say that's about 90% of the time I'm shooting hand held. I've yet to master 3D tracking.

I still get awed by all the focus points on my D7000 and the face I can pick. I was so used to my D60s choice of 3 where focus/recompose was almost compulsory.

There is a slight issue with regards to focus and recompose for those not aware, but generally it won't effect unless you are using the lens wide open.

Focus points work much better, the only time I recompose is in low light when the other focus points can't focus and I have to use the centre point.
