My wife and I are off to Tenerife on Monday and I am after some advice on what to put in hand luggage and what to pack in the hold.

I have a Redsnapper Duo bag which easily holds the following :

Panasonic G1 body
20mm f1.7 lens
14-45mm lens
45-200mm lens
Raynox DCR-250 macro attachment thingy
mains charger
rocket blower
uv & cpl filters
microfibre cloths
spare battery & cards
instruction manual
Optech pro strap

and still has plenty of room for a book for the flight and passport / phone etc.

Should I put ANY of that little lot in hold luggage, or is it best to take all of it in the cabin where I can look after it. I can't find anything on the Ryanair website about restricted items other than the usual no knives / guns explosives etc.

Any thoughts ?

Cheers in advance,
Daniel.

should be fine with that.

Cool... is there anything I've missed (other than a tripod) ?

I've still got a couple of days if there's anything I need.

As long as it doesn't exceed 10kgs take it as hand luggage, if it does then keep the camera and lenses with you.

That's what I used to do, but Ryanair have now got super fussy and you are only allowed 1 piece of hand luggage and everything must go in it, including camera, handbag, sandwiches etc.

I flew Ryanair to Norway a couple of weeks ago and put most of my stuff in my carry on bag (Lowepro fastpack). I left tripod in my hold bag and it surved fine as it was packed with clothes around it.

I see in your list you had a Raynox.Just found my Raynox 150 out of the cupboard and tried it on my 14-42 lens. It worked a treat. I'm really pleased now as I have found a use for it. I thought it was obsolete after I bought my Sigma 105 Macro for my D80.

Following a recent incident with a video camera, check your insurance. Our holiday insurer refused to pay out on a damaged camera that was in our suitcase on the grounds that it should have been in hand luggage.

Our house insurance (which has away from home cover) coughed up instead.

I sold a v-camera to a guy in Dublin. Postage was well over £100 and he wanted it with in a couple of days. He flew over in the morning, I met him at Bristol, had lunch in a local pub and he flew back in the afternoon.
This is the email I received from him.

Many, many thanks Brian, I'm just sorry I couldn't write anymore on the feedback!
Bit of a palaver coming over - the box was just the tiniest bit to big to fit into the 'Ryanair Slot', and as I told them I wouldn't let it go into the hold and they are going to have to let me take it all out and put it in the bag (as in the black plastic bag you wrapped it in!), that is what I started to do! She regretted it the moment she said it, and as I was the last one to board (I always wait for the crowds to clear!), she began to feel a little bit more stupid than I did! It actually took up far more space, as the whole thing ended up sticking out the top of the 'slot', but she panicked and said 'that's ok', meaning I had to walk to the plane carrying a bin liner with a bleeding broadcast HDV video camera in it! Absolutely ridiculous, as now it was a massive, shapeless bag that couldn't fit anywhere! Even the stewardess when I boarded couldn't believe they made me do it! We squeezed it in anyway - minus the camera, which I kept wrapped in my jacket between my feet - no way was I letting that go unprotected in the locker! Felt like a right idiot, but the moment I got off the plane, I put it all back together perfectly, and I was on my way. I dunno, Ryanair just never fails to astound me sometimes!
Anyway, off to walk the dogs, who after being out back all day, are hyper - then back to start playing with my new tool, before it is put to work tomorrow!
Many, many thanks again for all Brian, it was a real pleasure meeting you all - oh, and of course - thanks for lunch and the Guinness!! Haha!!

I guess the "slot" is some sort of frame that your hand luggage has to fit into:shrug:

Thanks for the reassurance ;)

My bag is squishy enough to fit in the slot if I leave the laptop sleeve out (I'm not taking my laptop anyway). Fingers crossed :bonk:

The Ryanair "slot" is a good bit smaller than most regular airlines and the big Lowepro bag I have (computrekker or rover aw, forget which) that is supposed to be carry-on sized is 1" too wide front-to-back for Ryanair/Easyjet. I've never had a problem with it though.

But it's all about looks rather than absolute size, if it looks about right and you look confident about it you're very unlikely to get checked. Don't go creating doubts by test-fitting in the slot as you queue in front of check-in.

During my last flight they made almost everyone check the size of their bags JUST OUTSIDE THE PLANE and made many people check them in and pay ...

Totally agree with this. Leave it on your back and don't draw any attention to it. Only take it off if you really have to. You should be fine. I've never had my carry on bag checked and when I went to Norway it had 1DmkIV, 24-70, 70-200, 17-40 plus a book a magazine etc in it! They seem to be getting more picky about it though. :(

I try to avoid putting anything in checked baggage that would hurt too much if it gets broken/stolen.

This used to happen at OR Tambo (Johannesburg) airport too, but it was usually a scam. The "security" people had scanned the carry on bags, decided which ones has stuff worth stealing in them, and tipped off their friends in the airlines. Now, a bag that passed the check in process was suddenly too large for a carry on? Lead to a few confrontations and delays while I unpacked the bag and stuck stuff in my pockets or handed it to my wife/colleagues until the bag shrank enough to meet the rules.

Thanks - I am going to leave the laptop sleeve out and it should be fine. I assume I am allowed to 'squish' it into the slot if they check it ? The G1 rattles around in the bag anyway so there's plenty of room for manoeuvre.

I won't be taking my dog though...

That's a bit Paris Hilton! Perhaps a bit more Bournemouth Travel Lodge though ;)

I take my Lowe Pro roller on Ryanair, never been stopped and it's a perfect fit for the baggage cage thing. I do however tend to pick it up and grit my teeth as I walk through the boarding desk, rather than roll it! Last time it weighed in at 15kg.. 5kg over the limit. Muscles like Popeye. A chap behind me got stopped and had to empty some bits out though. Big green cases must be more suspect than tidy black ones :)
