Flying with a Tripod

I'm having a bad day...I'm assuming that i will have to check the tripod into main luggage in my case? or can i carry it on with me as an additional piece of hand luggage?
 
You may find you have to check it in. I flew back from France last year having driven down with the tripod in the car and I got stopped as I put my rucksack through the x ray and had to go and check my back in. Don't think they appreciated my trying to take so big metal poles on board.

That's kinda what i was thinking! it's the redsnapper i have and it has nice spikes on it too so that may also be an issue :)

Maybe better option would be firing a gorillapod in my backback
 
Threaten the guys at security that you'll kill them with it if they don't let you through. That should do the trick... :D
 
I always check mine in. I bought a padded case for it and it's been on well over 200 flights without damage.

Money well spent I think.
 
Just don't leave a spanner and a swiss army knife in your camera bag like I did lol.

I put the tripod in my case and covered it with clothes to protect it :D
 
thanks guys, and i have the padded case from redsnapper so sticking it in a case with clothes should be fine

In 200 flights the baggage handlers have been unsuccessful in bending it!, that is amazing considering the way they hurl you baggage about!.
 
Good thread, im going to dubrovnik, croatia in may, and i was wondering whether or not to bring my tripod.

Although i'll have to see if it'll fit in my case or not.

Time for a bigger suitcase maybe!!
 
i have had my tripos and camera bag over my shoulder. the tripod was inits own bag. i managed to takeiti on as hand luggage to and from menorca in spet last year.
IT depends on the airline/airport. I asked both times at checkin and they were fine with it.
I always leave enough room in the suitcase just in case they do mind.
