Beginner Flying Scotsman

I'm hoping to catch the flying Scotsman on its route around the country. I have 3 possible positions to photograph from. 2 are small platform stations with street lighting above and the 3rd is an overhead footbridge above the line. The footbridge is on a stretch of line with no lighting. The train will be passing about 7pm so it will be dark. The platform stations will be mobbed I think. The footbridge could be a hidden gem, but no lighting!! I have a Nikon D3200, kit lens, 55-200 and a 35mm F1.8 prime. What would you suggest I do and what settings and advice can you give me as im a beginner. Thanks.

Rather than photograph in complete darkness, how about bringing up googlemaps, working backwards from the route you were planning to see if there are any side roads you might be able to park on and get a decent shot of it in the setting sun?

When you photograph a steam train it needs to be climbing, it needs to have the sun side on or slightly back lit and the wind needs to be blowing onto the front of the train or from behind you. It's also best to get out into the countryside.If the train is running under wires like the Scotsman will be doing a lot of, you will need to find an area with a gap without wires and gantries.Railway photography takes years to learn mainly due to knowing locations and were the sun will be.
