Me and my son are just thinking of doing a few nights stay somewhere where we can have a go at fly fishing. We really fancy doing it on a river setting rather than lakes. We will need a bit of tuition as well. Has anyone on here done this or can offer any advise or recommendations before I start trawling through all the ads on the net?

Cant offer much advice, but unless you've done it before its probably easier to start on lakes. I suppose the obvious choices for looking for river tuition is the Tweed in Scotland or similar.

River fishing on fly can be very pricy, depending on where you go. Chalk stream fishing, with a good guide, can be hundreds of £s ( and more), especially on somewhere like the river Test etc.
Expect to pay around £400 per rod, per day. ( Or more !), and that is without any guide !
Fly fishing is a wonderful pastime, but it can take years to perfect your cast. A good tutor is vital right from the start, but the basics can be picked up quickly and get you casting and catching fish.
As mentioned, a lake/reservoir is a good place if you are a total beginner, rivers tend to be a bit more difficult, especially if there are trees, hedges etc !
You didn't say whereabouts you are looking to go?

I'd go to a paying pond first Neil, it's the best place to learn i'd say.
There's bound to be someone there willing to give you a few tips on casting for free and you're more likely to get a fish on.

As an example in cost this is an Irish guide as a fishery just down the river from where I've fished in the past, and book Glenda for the day your going to be looking at €300/ day for the two of you though she does also offer an hourly rate... But I'm guessing the fishing and accommodation will be more on top...to be honest I think you'll find it easier to initially learn on a lake than a river from my experience...to be totally honest I first learn actually in my back garden to perfect casting flyless naturally

My honest advice would be visit your local fishing tackle shop, any decent shop will be able to point you in the right direction for some tuition and practical experience, fly fishing in my opinion is probably the hardest fishing technique to learn

WOW! After looking at the prices on rivers it's time to move to plan B. Thanks for the replies.
and plan B is ?.
As others have suggested for a beginner lakes are your best option. there are still some pretty reasonable fisheries about and some even with small stretches of river close by . with equipment rental and more importantly, people who are very willing to offer help and advice.
make sure that you purchase the necessary rod license, because if you get caught fishing without one could result in you being fine BIG money. Hope you find somewhere as its a great past time.

A mate of mine has a half mile stretch of the River Tweed that he disappears off to every weekend.

I could ask him if he takes guests in. I know he sometimes takes friends and family there.

Not a holiday but Orvis offer free beginners lessons the next date being the 19th of July.

If you feel like traveling this far you could look here http://www.westhavenb-b.co.uk

I have just come back from a part fishing holiday in Scarborough. Spent alternate days fishing Wycombe Lakes they have both course and trout lakes on day tickets. Very reasonable prices.
