Thanks to a post on here I now manage to avoid having half a frame orange and the rest correct by using 1/100th sec with a DSLR. (y)

But does going slower bring the problem back, and am I right in thinking that compact cameras don't suffer from this problem because they use a leaf shutter?

don't think leaf shutters have anything to do with anything
going slower doesn't bring the problem back
its about fast shutter speeds relative to the frequency, the peaks and troughs of fluorescent light output
I think you still have a chance at a badly exposed frame even at 1/100th, uk mains electrical frequency is 50hz, 1 cycle is 1/50th of a second, so 1/50th or slower will see you avoiding variation in light levels and colour balance...:)

Ta. I've had no probs at 1/100th but going slower will be a help at times.
