Hi. I am going to Florida on a family holiday next year and I am a little undecided as to what kit I should take. I am taking my Canon 50D but wanted to know whether I should take my 17-85mm and 70-300mm lenses or invest a in a superzoom to cover these ranges and take just the one lens. What are your thoughts on this one please.

Thank you.

If the $/£ exchange rate sorts itself out by then I'd be inclined to buy a lens whilst over there... ;)

That's a very good point and not one I had considered. I will still need a lens until I could get one though!!

Depends on where in Florida you are going? and what you want to shoot. I think you will be ok with what you have for general stuff.

When I was in florida I mainly took the 18-55mm around with me and left the other at the hotel. Pack light as the heat is unreal! What part are you going too?

Im off to Florida in March, and just taking the 24-70 siggy... I think if you need a 70-300mm if your going to take pics of family on the rides going past whilst your on the ground.

Think about the weight too, big parks, long days, it wont be easy.

...and that on some rides, you have to check your bags or put them in lockers. Remember also that if you are going off the theme park trail there is loads of wildlife just waiting to be photographed - for that you may need the longer lens.

Unless you are able to pre order, your options may just be Ritz Cameras or BestBuy. A swift google will take you to their websites to check prices - you may also wish to do a search for Dixons Duty Free and get a lens on the way out - sometimes their prices are very keen and at least you get warranty

I would have thought the 17-85mm would be fine for most of the parks although a longer reach zoom/tele would be useful in the animal based ones.

Therefore a 'super zoom' may suit your needs better as you can be sure that on the day you leave the tele at the hotel will be the day you miss it!!

Last time I went I didn't have an SLR but had a Panasonic Z18 where the zoom range came in really useful especially at the animal parks (Sea World/Bush Gardens/Animal Kingdom).

You don't want to be carrying too much around all day as it can be really hot and humid as already mentioned plus you can almost guarantee a thunderstorm each day so you need to be able to protect your equipment!!

Some of the rides actually insist that you leave bags in a locker or worse still just by the side of the ride as you get on it - not sure I'd want to be leaving an SLR unattended. Also be prepared on some rides to potentially get soaked so you need to keep that in mind if you take the camera with you!!

All top tips and thank you all. I am heading over to Orlando to hit all the parks we can, I think I may take what I have and may end up leaving the 70-300mm in the hotel if I really don't need it.
Thanks again for your input.

I'm out in Florida quite a bit (in fact I'm here in Miami as I type this) and have been all over from Orlando down to the Keys but I mostly do wildlife. If that does interest you, the 70-300 will get you quite close to a lot of the wildlife here (check out Viera wetlands, about 45 mins or so from Orlando). Otherwise if you will be doing parks and nothing else the kit you have now will be good enough for general shots :)

Many thanks Peter and enjoy the weather in Miami......
