Sorry another please help thread...

Has anyone recently bought any floor tiles for their kitchen? If you have did you go for a matt or gloss finish? What size tiles did you go for?

We want to get the 60cm by 60cm ones but unsure as to if we go for gloss or matt. At the tile shop they suggested gloss as on the matt ones you need to be careful if you spil something one it it may stain.

Thank you

I have matt tiles on my kithen floor, 3 cats and to and fro-ing from outside hasnt stained them just a good mopping and they come up great

Thanks. We have two kids and we're thinking of getting matt or slightly gloss ones to stop people slipping.

never slipped on the tiles even when coming in with very wet boots on

We've got shiny granite tiles and they are lethal with wet shoes. The amount of times I've nearly done the splits.
However they look fantastic

Depends what material you go for.
You should go for porcelain rather than ceramic for a kitchen floor. I just fitted about 50sqm (600x400)the other week for a customer(downstairs W/C to hall to dining room to kitchen to utility and three cupboards off)- these are matt finish porcelain:

Ceramic tend to break if you drop something on them, the thing that drops tends to break with porcelain :)
Ceramic are more prone to staining, as are natural materials.
What surface are you fitting them to? Concrete is good, a timber/chipboard floor needs strengthening and overlayed otherwise the tiles will lift.

Thank you all for the replies. The tiles will go on a concrete base with water based under floor heating.

Ask for pics/references from your fitter.

BTW, tilers get discount from tile merchants. They may or may not pass this on to you.
I tend to pass the saving on to my customers. It varies from about 10% to 25%.
The customer for the tiles shown in the pics saved about £300 on these tiles.

We built a new extension of 50m2 and had some 300x300 spare ceramic tiles so laid them out

A couple of days later we got a good deal with gloss anthracite porcelain tiles. The tiler did a brilliant job and very pleasing when all the areas (family room, cathedral ceiling kitchen and WC/shower room) were fitted out. A year on and still spotless.

Scale suits the 600x600 tiles.

Thanks. Any idea of good suppliers of tiles in NW London.

Most tilers use Tile Giant or Topp's Tiles around the country. I'm in Edinburgh :)
Ask at the Tiling Forum for good suppliers in your area. They're a very friendly bunch.
I think you can ask advice as a guest.

Or the other forum:

I'll ask anyway :)

Thank you will have a look at the forum. Have you heard of RAK Ceramics, are their tiles okay?

Sorry, don't know them.

One tiler has replied- they're probably working! (I'm having a few days off) He mentioned Tile Depot.

If possible, try walking on tiles you're considering to make sure you feel safe on them. Most of the floors on holiday are tiled and a couple of them have been absolutely lethal when wet.

Pity leftcurl doesn't post any more, he's in the tiling trade I think

We've had porcelain tiles in the hall and kitchen for nearly 8 years now. I was dubious at first because porcelain is fragile, right? Still look as good as the day they were fitted :)

If you can then check out underfloor heating though. We have the really cheap kind in the kitchen that just takes the chill off them and it makes a big difference to comfort in winter. Wasn't expensive compared to the rest of the job.

Thank you all for suggestions and help. We already have underfloor heating installed. Should hopefully be connected in a day or two, fingers crossed.

check fixing quotes with your tiler as expect to pay more for porcelain than ceramic especially if large format 60x60 or 60x30 etc and if your sub floor isnt flat, also check with supplier if the porcelain needs sealing as its sometimes does, pretty much any of the big suppliers are ok on price, i dont think topps are as good as the used to be on price, certainly give less trade now than they did years ago. World of Tiles in Dagenham is a very good shop if not to far from you and i get up to 40 percent trade there. Tower ceramics are ok and was doing some good deals on natural stone. these guys are great and do mail order ive used them many times especially for marble and other stone http://www.stonetilemarket.co.uk/ there in Rainham Essex...

RAK ceramics are if i remember correctly a Turkish manufacture, im sure ive fitted them many times and dont remember any issues. Some tiles come in from China now and ive found them to be low quality especially the porcelain....

cheers

I sell tiles for a day job . I had dealings with rak years ago ok tiles but there's better out there . If you want polished porcelain it will need sealing . Fitting wise you'd be looking at around £30 a m2 , maybe more in London as costs vary dramatically down south . You'll need flexible adhesive and grout with the underfloor heating , this costs more also so bear that in mind . I can't discuss too much on a public forum about where I work as things can get somewhat difficult as have happened un the past , but if you want any advice you can always pm me and I'll try to help you .
John .

John,

Thanks. Hopefully should be going to see some today with the OH. Will try and take down the names and cost and may be in touch.
