Went to photograph the oldest's school 1st XV game this afternoon.

In the car the thermometer said it was 7 Celsius outside.

With the wind chill factor my goodness it was cold. I know the saying is

"Weather is neutral. It’s neither good nor bad. It just is. What’s bad about it is how prepared you are for it".

Well I wasn't prepared. Thermal vest, t-shirt, sweatshirt and thin jacket was certainly not sufficient.

I also had on some neoprene fishing gloves that have fold back fingers, so I just had my shooting fingers out = insufficient.

For my top half all I needed was my fishing jacket instead of the thin one I had on.

It got me thinking about you "Northeners" who I believe have been having some pretty cold and wet weather & how it must sort out the boys from the men.

Me = boy :'(
 
I'm off down to Cheltenham Racecourse tomorrow for the December International meeting. It can be very cold in the wind as it rips up and across the finish straight. Usually kept warm with all the fast walking around from parade ring to course, to winning enclosure to parade ring to course to.....That said, I plan to be wearing...

Under armour top
Smelly Hellys - top and bottom
Little thin fleece number
Socks - 2 per foot
Craghoppers
Jacket - thin Berghous
Snood thing
Deer hunter hat

and lip-balm... what?

And I shall be moaning from start to finish.

I'm getting soft in my old age and if it drops below 0, I often put on a long-sleeve shirt to go out on the town :)

However..........Standing around for a few hours in the elements is totally different, and I'd also be wrapping up a lot!
It's always my feet. Hiking boots, two-pair socks, thermal insoles, doesn't seem to make much difference :(
 
Merino wool base layers, expensive but well worth while.
 
i was at a game 10.30 am this morning.. if i wasnt wearing full body thermals i woul ahve come home.. bitter cold and no shelter from a biting wind.... have a fleece jacket that zips right up to my chin and a bigger windbreaker on top.. thick pants , good boots and one of them silly russan hats to keep my ears warm... normal cheap wooly gloves work for me..

:plusone: one of the best insulting wools you can buy, well worth the extra expense to buy gear using it.

Spurn Point For Sunrise on Tuesday, Paramo long sleeved base, paramo Mountain Shirt, Paramo Alta II jackets, Craghoppers trousers, with berghaus goretex over trousers, mountain socks and my trusty neoprene lined muck boots, hat and gloves, was toasty for the 3 hrs i was there until my batteries died and the wind was whipping straight off the North Sea
 
Hmm too tough some of you fellas.

Younger ones school footbal this afternoon, so when I get home from work, I'll be in the loft getting the fishing jacket and skiing pants out.

About 18 years ago when I ran a PC shop in Regent Street one of my customers was on old (70 odd Russian Jewish guy) used to come in for typewriter ribbons.

He had one of those hats. Anyway we got chatting and it turned out he made them for a living.

He took my head measurements and made me one.

Now I know it's in the loft somewhere..if the mice have gobbled it up I am going to find it.

I look daft enough with this face anyway :lol:
 
I'll pass on some advice from an expert.....when you're feeling chilled to the bone, reach for your nuts!

In the mid-70's I worked at the same place as mountaineer of some repute....Everest, K2 and others. One morning I arrived by bike, frozen to the core, after a big freeze killed the car battery. I duly received a lecture on the benefit of "reaching for your nuts"
Mountaineers keep a handy stash of nuts, not simply due to weight and convenience, but because eating them raises the body temperature and offsets the feeling of cold.

(Sadly, within a few months of this advice, my colleague was swept to his death by an avalanche on K2)

A distant (33yrs+) memory now but he died doing what he loved. Sadly he left a wife and three young children behind.

I work outside as a gardener and end up working in all weathers right through the winter. Layers of good quality clothes is the answer.I can remove or add layers depending on how hard im working. If you can keep the wind out it is a big help.
 
Fairly cold up here at the moment to

I was snapping at Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night (7L45 KO)

-1 by the end, I clothing attack was as follows

1 x short sleeve base layer
1 x long sleeve base layer
1 t shirt
1 jumper
1 fleece
1 rain jacket
2 pairs of pants, two pairs of socks
Hat
Gloves
Snood

And yes, it was lovely and warm, never felt the cold :D
 
What is they say? Never bad weather, just inappropriate clothing??
I'm confined to barracks right now, chose this time of year for a foot op just so I can have a good excuse NOT to be pitchside for a few weeks.

I don't recommend it, but at least I can stay indoors when the weather is ******. (Laugh at the 'feet under the table' - more like 'foot elevated on the stool')

Do you guys uncover fingers for shooting or straight through the glove?
 
I have a thermal top but on the bottom half only wear jeans and my legs get so cold. Need to get myself some thermal trousers and waterproofs to go over the top. But my usual layers are thermal top, rugby shirt, fleece/hooded sweatshirt and big coat. A pair of thermal socks and a pair of rugby socks. Hat and scarf as well. And extra addition is my hip flask :D

I have however, just got a great pair of gloves off Amazon, my hands were toasty warm last weekend and I'm actually looking forward to try them out for this weekend too:

I use my fingers outside the glove, rather than fold the finger back though I just let it rest against the back of my finger as it covers it from a draft
 
I usually travel to where I'm shooting by motorbike, so am dressed for the cold anyway as I have very good bike kit. I'm off to an ice rink in a bit and it'll probably be warmer inside the rink than out:thinking:
 
I can confirm that the gloves were win proof and waterproof :D
 
I'm kinda scared, leaving SA tommorow, I've been here 2 years, it's coming into summer and I have mild sunburn atm, I know I'm not prepared.
 
No, not yet, only went down to about 3° yesterday morning. My hands were little chilly but not as bad as they have been.

I used to have a genuine KGB border guard issue one - wish i could find it as its damn cold (-2) and trying to snow here in 'balmy' devon
 
Glove update! Hands were cold this weekend in them, albeit they are windproof and waterproof, they still don't keep all the heat in. I have now ordered a pair of silk undergloves to go with them :D
