Booked return flights a while ago for me and the missus through Expedia to Portugal with Ryanair in September. Couple of days later get an email telling/reminding me we had no baggage allowance and this had to be booked separately.

Tried to arrange this online tonight and it appears we're allowed 10kg each hand luggage but for a suitcase each they're charging £40, per case, per person per flight + VAT so it comes to nearly another £200. Is that a normal price to have to pay for this? Seems a bit steep.:mad:

Yep. The less you pay for your flight, the more luggage costs. Funny that ;)

Cheers Jonathan. Thought that must be the case. Rip off, budget airlines, false economy. Lesson learned.

Ah well, suppose I'll just have to wear about 10 layers of clothes on the flights then.:D The wifes a fat boot anyway so I can hide various items about her person, nobody will notice the difference:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Never used them but there are third parties that'll send your luggage separately e.g. https://www.sendmybag.com/

Cheers, but I ain't gonna risk that. We'll just have to travel light and I'll probably just buy cheap clobber over there, t shirts shorts and stuff and bin them before we come home.

I think Easyjet is around that mark. (£30 - £55 depending on weight.) If you're flying with baggage and the like, sometimes it's cheaper to use a non 'budget' airline.

Consider joining BAEC, playing the game with MR points / Avios, and it only costing you £35 return for flights inc. 20kg hold luggage each... It won't help this year, but could work in time for next years trip...

there rip off merchants good style ,went through this palaver a couple of weeks ago and ended up saying sod it and going to yorkshire in the caravan instead .

watch your hand luggage sizes to you will be hard pressed to get 10kg in the bag size they state and if it overlaps there cage check equipment they will refuse it and charge you for it as hold luggage .although i do believe they now also allow a shopping bag with you ?? a large multi pocketed waistcoat or body warmer stuffed to capacity is another way round there stupid regs .

ALSO AND VERY IMPORTANT WITH RYANAIR make sure you print out and retain your boarding passes BOTH WAYS ,before you go as otherwise it costs a fortune to do it at the airport .

To be fair, all you have to do is read the small print when booking :-)

Ryanair are ostensibly cheap because they charge a fortune for anything beyond your seat and hand luggage.
This allows them to offer seats for relatively little as they're making the money back elsewhere. Or another way to think of it is that they're subsidising those who travel light by hammering those who want to bring luggage.

I fly Ryanair quite regularly but only for short trips where I don't need to take much with me. If you need to take lots of luggage it can quickly become a false economy.

If you're going to fly with a budget airline, you must read the small print. They're making their money somewhere. They're not economic magicians.

hmmmm thats the thing.. fly for £10.. oh you want a bag... thats another £30 or so...

Last time I flew with either ryan or cryin' they wanted £30 each way for the golf bats which gave me 32kg extra.... so I took some bricks to Spain and brought home enough wine (to make it bang on 32kg... )

I am thinking sometime soon they will charge per kg of passenger + bag, as in I am about 90kg in new money but a colleague is about half that. If we flew somewhere, would be same price (apart from the luggage for her 12 cases for a day trip).. but gt my thinking?

Wasn't it crying who were contemplating £1 for a pee?

What? Why?

Because they insisted on charging a flat rate up to 32kg.... for a golf bag, therefore that golf bag weighed 32 Kg.... if they want to be "royal stunts", so can I.

What? Really? You filled a bag with bricks to meet the luggage allowance? That's absolutely insane.
The only person you've inconvenienced there is yourself. It's like something Alan Partridge would do.
You're winding us up, aren't you?

Flew Ryanair going to Poland and had no issue taking to 600mm f4, D700 and a 24-70 with me-was cacking my pants though but i was one of the lucky ones who got through ok....lol
weirdly enough i had the same experience flying to wroclaw ,southern poland .but ryanscare is the ONLY direct flight and even the check in ryanair security at l/pool airport seemed to be polish ,97.5% of passengers were to hmmmmmmm .

We could fly with EJ but don't. It does mean we have to drive a hundred or so miles from the destination airport to where we stay but it's a beautiful journey so no hardship! By the time we add on hold baggage etc as well as fuel and parking (they don't fly from our local airport so we'd have to do about an hour's drive to get to BRS), it's as cheap for us to go flight only on a charter flight from our local airport (EXT). 15 minutes in a taxi (if we can't blag a lift!) away and fewer oiks like Mr Brash on the flight!!! ;)

You really can tell the majority of EJ/RA passengers at the far end when we return.

Flown EJ a few times and never really had a problem, the booking was easy, nice big pop ups making sure you had included a baggage allowance if you wanted one, choose your own seats etc... in fact the only 'thing' that has ever bothered me is the fact they now do allocated seating and yet still the great unwashed rush to queue at the gate to get on and spend ages sitting around on a plane whilst we have stood with a few others and waited until the coast is clear, looking on in bemusement at the stampede. Ryanair though was a different matter, just the once, about 5 years ago, to a karate tournament in Ireland.... never again
