Afternoon all - I heard a rumor the other day that, in Flick'rs T&C's, they can basically take ownership of any pictures uploaded to there website?

I like the idea of Flickr, because you get 1TB of space, but not sure I like the idea of losing the IPR!

Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I'm sure from the last time that I bothered to read them it was something about the right of yahoo companies to make use of the images for things such as the yahoo weather app, it's nearly all just the standard T&C for that type of site....look at the effect on instergram when they tried to implement right grabbing T&Cs

That's a bit cheeky! Do people just put up with the fact that Yahoo can use the images as and when they like, or do they not know I wonder?

It's simple...go buy a website...write the code...pay for the storage/bandwidth etc and then you don't have to abide by the terms of Flickr  personally I prefer the convenience of Flickr....it doesn't cost me a penny to use it and for that its useful for displaying photos on the forum...all code is auto generated etc..I've made some really useful contacts...even made some money out of it via getty

My outlook on it is Flickr go to the expense of setting up the systems, building the server network and maintaining and everything else that goes with that...so if they want to make use of my images on there company sites that's fine by me...okay so that ethos will not really suit commercial photographers but then flickr is not really designed for commercial photographers per say ;) so them using my images occasionally covers the cost of the services that they provide so I don't have to pay for that service ;)

^^^^^^^
Totally agree:thumbs:

Slightly off topic, but how have you utilised Flickr to make useful contacts and make money from it? As you can tell I am very new to photography (and Flickr) so I'm always on the look out for tips :D

One final question - if you upload to Flickr and then download another side, does that deteriorate any of the picture quality? I know places like Facebook reduce the size/resolution of pictures you upload which renders them cr@p.

It allows me to follow photographers who's work I like or that is in line with my interests like wise as big headed as it sounds but it also allows people to follow my work if it inspires them as a few has said it is...which obviously is quite an ego boost if I'm honest :suspect:

How do I make money, that's thanks to the getty/Flickr scheme where getty will review your work and if they like it invite you to add it to there library, then if your lucky you'll make the odd sale  I've only made the one sale but that was appreciated :D

File degradation. As with anything where a file is processed and resaved etc there will be some file degradation but that is minimal for the first few saves on the whole

The Yahoo weather app uses images submitted for use by Flickr users. If you don't add your images to the group, they won't be used by Yahoo.

I know that I've got some of mine in there at their request ;) but was using it as the easiest example of what the T&Cs relate to :) other examples would be stuff like the Flickr blog...one of mine was featured last year :D

Well done young man

There are billions of photos on Flickr.
The chances of them using yours for something must be minute and not even worth thinking about.

I pay about 80 quid a year.. I have around 150 thousand pictures on my website and all for sale using a simple shop/paypal system... I have my own terms nobody elses.. www.kipax.com

As the man says.. you want control then take control... the moment you start uploading your pics to someone elses website like flikr who can change terms or whatever whenever then your losing control of your images...

I only use Flickr as a host so I can show pictures here and elsewhere. They're all set to Private so harder for people to rip off and all at 800px long side so (quite apart from the content!) not worth ripping off apart from web use.

One of the reasons for the (apparent) rights grabbing of sites like Flickr is that they couldn't show your pictures to anyone without being allowed rights to do so.

Slightly more sinister since Flickr's recent restyle is they now allow uploading of full res images.

They always did.

:suspect:
