Ok everyone. Short and sweet.

How do I boost my views on Flickr? I do tag a lot of my images but I still don't have many views, I know that people are more likely to look at a striking image rather than a boring one, and I'm not saying for one minute that I think my images are amazing however there is a lot of mediocre stuff (not from this forum I may add) on there that have loads of views?

Am I missing a trick?

What's the secret?

Nick

Try commenting on other people's photos. Most decent people will take the time to reciprocate. Take part in groups and be nice! Try not to spam too many pics with "great shot" or "very nice". Take the time to comment appropriately and people will feel obliged to comment on your stuff.

The principles I posted on this Flickr discussion apply to Flickr as a whole as well as specific groups.

It's the basic things, like putting a link to your Flickr page on your signature on this forum. Unless you pimp your Flickrstream it won't get seen, and Flickr is all about participation - you won't get anything back if you don't put anything in.

Tag your photos with

Boobs, tits, ass, etc lol

Take photos that please the majority and/or post them in groups that are the right size and are nice and cliquey.

It is ultimately a social media game that involves photos...

Probably daft to say but join groups based on your camera / lens what you are interested in and post pics and comment on ones you like. As you are in the Norht East, have you joined the Chronicle North East Group? If not you might want to try as the Chronicle often print them / put them on the online gallery too. As already mentioned you might want to link to your photostream in your signature.

I'm wondering why you are concerned that your photos don't have many views, after all why does it matter, I've never grasped why x number of views is important.

I suppose its a confidence thing, after all I'm still relatively new to photography and its nice to get feedback bad or good.

Doesnt work.. I tried it with a picture of my phillips Razor. Still only has 3 views.

Well, post your images here and ask for feedback.
In most cases it will be more valuable than most of the comments on flickr.

You won't really get proper feedback from Flickr as that is not really what it is about. That is why most feedback is "wow, nice shot", "how cute" etc,. rather than "you need exposure x, try this", "you missed focus, try that", "god that shot is boring" etc,.

Even for a confidence thing it is a bit misplaced as number of views are not generally based on the image as much as what the image is and what category it falls into.

I saw someone add the word Lego to their title and they immediately got a drastic increase in views...

It took me a long time to get my head round Flickr, worthy shots are often overlooked & mediocre shots glorified but saying that, once you realise that you have to play the Flickr game you'll either get a lot more interaction or you'll stop caring about it

Works with mine but they do generally have boobs in them lol

My most viewed image is a picture of a poster with various protein crystals. It was shot at iso 3200 with a 40D just to see what the noise was like.

Having lots if views means nothing as do most comments.

I have started to think along those lines as well.

At least Google Plus galleries (I prefer this to Flickr) does not even record the number of views, so no chance of being disappointed if a picture gets almost no views.

I only use flickr to hold images for posting I dont really care if they are veiwed or not.
but the interesting tag names do work.
I have a picture on flickr called Ogden girl. it was a picture of a young lady skinney dipping in our local reservoir.
I had to mark it for my viewing only.

it got over 100 views in just 3 days and there is nothing naughty to see. :naughty:
"PERVES" LOL

An instant way to generate hits is to use the share to twitter option adding hashtags.

You won't really get proper feedback from Flickr as that is not really what it is about.

You can if you know where to look.. the only difference between Flickr and TP for generating useful/constructive feedback/critique is that Flickr is bigger, the percentage of "Nice shot" comments is about the same across the two, as is the percentage of views that leave no comment at all. Flickr does have the advantage of Groups, which makes it easier to direct the shots you want comment on to the people you'd like to make comments. If you want meaningful critique from Flickr it's there for the taking.

It depends whether you "get" Flickr, and if you like what it offers. Not everyone does, so you get a string of posts on thread like this that aren't particularly constructive from the usual suspects.

If you're struggling to get the most from Flickr, check if you fall into one of these types of user:
  • You're not in any groups, you don't tag, you have few contacts and you tend to upload 20 very similar images at a time in bursts with a long gap between uploads (and probably with titles like DSC3435.jpg)
  • You're in 50+ groups but don't actively participate in any of them, the groups are all large (>1,000 members) and have a very high turnover of images posted every day (usually with no upload limit per member)
If either of those apply, you can make much better use of Flickr if you want to. That's just the extremes of using Flickr badly, there's a whole host of variations between these that play to Flickrs weaknesses rather than its strengths.

^^^ You have to become a Flickr Ho and pimp yourself out a lot

Not strictly true. None of my last 3 Explored are in groups. And when the previous Explored were chosen they weren't in groups either.

Well they fall into the "Take photos that please the majority" in that case.

Exactly, you need to know where to look and it only applies to certain groups. Just putting a photo up and expecting constructive criticism is not how Flickr generally works. In fact it woudl probably comes across as rude/misguided if you did start critiquing photos in most groups.

That sounds insulting. And the fact that I've had 2 bullfight images in Explore would show that really isn't the case.

I'm quite surprized with the photos that get the most views on my Flickr page. I would of expected some of my lesser viewed photos would get the most views but I'm not complaining. I very grateful for the nice comments I've recently been getting though and quite proud that 1 of my photos has been added to someones favourites. I've got hundreds of photos that I should put on there but I never seem to get round to it.

Could anyone tell me how I set up a link in my sig to my Flickr page, don't want to hijack the thread, just borrow it a bit lol.

Don't go looking for comments, because they'll not mean a thing. The ones that come natural, not just "nice pic" or "Nice capture" mean more. Let people discover you, post your images to groups related to your images or gear. There are groups for just about everything on there. I used to post in groups but rarely bother now. But I still add images to them.

I detest when people try their best to get on explore or just whore themselves around on there posting crap comments on every new upload in Flickr central - if you have to beg for comments you're either not very good or just not posting them about enough.

In that respect it's no different to TP.

Flickr might not work for you Chris, but it does work for others.

I don't have a problem with Flickr, I think it is good, but this discussion is about number of views and quality/worth of comments.

I also disagree and think it is nothing like TP. TP has a very clearly defined section for comment and critique while Flickr does not.

Wasn't really what the OP asked but.. I tend to use Flickr as more of a gallery to show my latest stuff, what events i've been photographing etc. I've found it's worked well and since i've had more interest in my photo work/services as people can see that i'm posting photos regularly.

It might be defined for critique.. but it's still 95%+ "Nice shot" or equivilent. No different to your average Flickr group, better the the worst and worse than the best.

Alastair, many thanks for the link. That would of taken me an age to go through that instead of 10 minutes.

The fact that it is defined is a benefit - if people can't be honest enough when reviewing is a different matter...

Take pictures of your wife in stockings with an Iphone!!
You will get loads of views then lol:thumbs:

I get a reasonable number of views on Flickr but its clearly related to the subject. Unusual locations, rare plants, celebrity concert shots. Never had any real critique. Doesn't bother me tho use it mainly for sharing images with friends, people on same trips and others who have asked me to take a particular series for them. Works well for me this way.
