Okay,

I'm having a bit of a think (uh-oh).

I have my photoblog at www.mattcharlton.co.uk/photoblog and its registered with lots and lots of photoblogging rss sites and the like but I don't seem to be getting much in the way of exposure (I'm feeling underexposed, heehee).

Now, Flickr seems to be very popular and their $25 a year pro account looks to be good value - I'm considering signing up, but I'm not sure.

Do I keep my photoblog and mirror what I put up on flickr? Drop the photoblog and just do flickr? Keep the photoblog and not bother with flickr?

Help and advice much appreciated.

Matt

If you're after exposure then Flickr generally involves "playing the comments game". Basically you submit your pictures to a number of groups, some of which have rules attached (e.g. post one picture, comment on two). Now this is fine in theory, but a lot of people don't really seem to enjoy commenting, so the kind of comments you'll get back are things like "nice shot" or "good composition". :bang:

So why do it? Well, the goal of a lot of the Flickr members is to get on the Explore front page and you do this by getting views, comments, or people "favouriting" your pics. The more you get, the higher up the rankings you go. Flickr has an "Interestingness" algorithm that's kept secret but works from these variables (and others) to work out who's top for the day. The algorithm changes occasionally as well, just to keep people on their toes :)

I do like Flickr and there are some great communities (groups) on there, some serious about critique, and others just about fun. There's also some stunning pictures from some very talented people. You can always sign up for a free account and try it out

Although I don't really use Flickr, what I rather like about it is the way you can just create your own groups (although there's often no need - as someone has probably made it). Which lets you share more obscure photos with like minded people. Case in point - IR [digital] & IR [film].

OT, but just had a whiz at your photoblog & I rather like it. Also really liking the birdy shot currenty on the front - goodun that.

Thanks Hoodi :)

Took that yesterday with the kit lens as they were all over the place when people were throwing chips in.
