flickr yes or no?

yeah get on it, good to check out inspiration and ideas and to share your own work, i also use mine as a bit of a backup for my images.

A yes from me, go for the pro option too, makes life easier.

Good support for uploading from lightroom as well.

Another pro account here...

really must make an effort to do something with it in 2011 :bang:

whats the difference with the Pro account then?

More storage capacity and access to stats.
The pro account is free if you sign up with a BT email address.

I currently use flickr and personally like it as it is another place to upload images that don't make it on to the website and also is another way to get more work out there. I make sure that most of the images are restricted to 600 pixels longest side because there are a few stories of images being misused on flickr. But it can be good to see others work as well, especially if you click the explore link and view the most interesting photos from the last 7 days, some very good work on the site if you look around.

i have a photobucket acount too, and seldom use it.
opened a flickr account, and already had someone add me.
thankyou.
its just another way to get my photos "out there" .
flickr seems the popular choice of hosting currently.
ta for the other suggestions too.

Recently joined flickr after seeing everyone using it.

How do people go about adding people to contacts? So far I only have people I know in person.

When I get contact requests, I take a look at the persons photostream, if I like what I see I add them as a contact. I like to comment as much as possible on my contacts photos. Makes it easier if I like their style and type of image/processing etc.

I add contacts myself based on the same reasons above, or obviously if I already know them

Does smugmug allow a plain background to be used? When I had a trial I'm sure it only allowed a graduated background image rather than say the ability to set the htlm hex code for the colour you want.

Not sure about the html hex code, but it does allow you to choose from a RGB colour space as a solid background colour. Tbh I'm not too into the customisations. But I do find smug evolving over time, the keyboard shortcuts are intuitive, good security features. The latest addition is the feature to download all your pictures in an album. Smug will basically package the pics into a zip file and host it for 2 weeks, it kindly sends you an email when the zip file is ready including the dl link.

If you don't have BT Internet you could ask someone who does to set up a sub-account for you. I done it for the wife and it worked.

Ok thanks,dont know who has a bt account,thanks anyway.

also have a look at www.pbase.com which I prefer
dave

I've recently moved from flickr to pbase and pbase has a much more professional looking interface. flickr also add loads of sharpening to your pics which got annoying, even though lots of people prefer heavily sharpened pics, just not me!

I've always used pbase. Very cheap for the storage available and a great interface and easy to use. If you use the delete original option the max size left is 800x600, plus medium and small sizes - all useful sizes for website stuff, small is thumbnail, medium is good for a taster, large is 800x600 which is big enough for web use.

A vote for Smugmug from me - much more flexibilty for gallery control/layout. I changed from a Flickr pro account 12 months ago and have not regretted it.
