Flickr - why ?

IMO, Flickr is well designed, user friendly, hosts your images at a high resolution, allows you to see how many people have viewed your picture etc, and allows for privacy options (like people can't copy and paste your pic). You only get ridiculous 'award' comments if u post to ridiculous groups. So far I've avoided it. I have a close group of photography friends there, and we like to use it to share pics with each other and inspire one another.

I've never used Photobucket but have been linked to pictures there. From a design perspective it's messy. it has ads, displays at weird resolutions like 93%, and has too much javascript hover-over pop down menus.

Unless you've got it set to friends or family viewing only, show me a Flickr image and I'll give you a URL that can be copied and pasted, let alone just a copy of the image itself.
 
Well, I'm another of the Luddites without Facebook (or any social networking), or flickr. I didn't like the terms and conditions on flickr, so host on Pbase and my own website for selling.

I really don't see the need for social networking, but then I'm on forums instead. If I want to write to friends etc I'll use email.

Which T&C in particular? I'm afraid I'm a "click on yes and maybe quickly scan the first para to see if there is a bit reading 'Muahhahaha' " - so I've done no flickr T&C review at all.

Keep your images 600-800 at the longest edge and nobody can do anything particularly harmful with them, i.e claim them as their own, sell them on etc... Just don't allow for downloading the full resolution files.

Add me to the list, from what i've read it just seems to cause people problems.

I do have a flickr account, but never used it, in fact its the pro version by virtue of having BT Broadband

Damn right!! That's the reason I use it, other than a last resort back up. It's all harmless at the end of the day.

However, I've seen some fantastic stuff on there and find inspiration for a lot of things. Some of the photographers on there are pretty amazing.

The last time I looked, for the privilege of using their hosting you gave the Yahoo group the rights to use your images, so I've re-read the latest terms and it seems they've reworded them...

(b) With respect to Content you elect to post for inclusion in publicly accessible areas of Yahoo! Groups or that consists of photos or other graphics you elect to post to any other publicly accessible area of the Services, you grant Yahoo! a world-wide, royalty free and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish such Content on the Services solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting the specific Yahoo! Group to which such Content was submitted, or, in the case of photos or graphics, solely for the purpose for which such photo or graphic was submitted to the Services. This licence exists only for as long as you elect to continue to include such Content on the Services and shall be terminated at the time you delete such Content from the Services.

I must admit however to being torn with joining now with the link to Getty, plus tales of others selling images.

Out of interest Byker28i, do you know of anyone whose Flickr images have been used and abused by Yahoo!?
 
I saw a recent image posted on Flickr from one of my contacts and remembered this thread. Check it out. It's a great Flickr success story.

This is actually my main gripe with Flickr.
You can avoid all the social ego massaging stuff if you like but your stuck with the (IMO) pretty crap design of the site.
I hate the way you navigate through albums/collections.

i use flikr to put shots on the forum when my quota on pix.ie is full
i have used snapfish but downloading is difficult...its there to sell printing
personally i dont really care whether other people see my shots..only family so flikr is ok for that
i do them a slide show
 
I use flickr API for a Q&D interface for my personal site - does the job for me.

From my time in Oz, I have a few who follow me on Whirlpool photo forums and they tend to be the few who comment on my photos on flickr.

Ego massage - why not? As someone else said, no one else is likely to do it for me in relation to my photographic ability!
