I keep seeing these in older threads:-

I use file upload service rather than flickr to avoid these problems (hopefully).

With this in mind, Is flickr the best method for people to post their pictures?

That usually means that the image has been deleted in Flickr. This would happen whatever hosting service you use. You're seeing it on older threads because people have probably had a clearout since posting them here.

Hi Fabs, i was aware of the reason, as i accidentally deleted a load of pictures previously. What i use is cloudapp (similar to droplr, fluffyapp) which is a simple file upload service, and is less susceptible to missing images as there's little need to rearrange / play with files files once uploaded.

Why would you need to rearrange/play with files in Flickr, not that you can.

Hi fabs, it was during 'playing around' with the pictures in flickr organiser that i deleted a lot of pics. Also if people rearrange their stream and decide that some pictures dont fit, they may then delete them causing the above problem. The point im trying to make is that flickr isn't really the best method of displaying pictures on forum due to their transience (my word of the day!)

Hmm, I've sorted and arranged photos in Flickr for years and never deleted any. I suppose it's all down to the way you use it but I'd suggest that maybe Flickr isn't the best method for you. ;)

If you're a free user approaching the 200 file limit you might decide to remove some older ones with few views.

You'd be daft to do that as any images above the 200 file count are still there and will still be shown on forum posts.

Rearranging your sets and collections will not cause the file not found error, that is caused either by editting the image, replacing the image or deleting it.

I find that as I develop as a photographer that I am no longer proud of the images that I took 3 or 4 years ago and don't want them associated with my account and so delete them from flickr.

Or you can mark them private

Not sure but I don't think that breaks linking to the image

No it doesn't but the way I read what the OP put was he wanted to still have it show in forum but not viewable on flickr, maybe I read it in correct

If you don't have a pro account and update the picture in Lightroom for example then it has to upload a new version and delete the original

Hi Matt, after seeing lots of the "picture unavailable" throughout threads, i was wondering whether people could consider another method of uploading that doesn't break the threads, because a lot of people remove items from flickr for many reasons. I've chosen not to link to many flickr images for this reason.

Cheers!

Well the issue is that no matter where the photo is hosted if they choose to delete the photo then that embedded image is going to get broken too :( and flickr still remains IMO the easiest and most convenient way to host and share photos

But perhaps the link is broken intentionally.

Hi Brian, that may well be the case in some instances. But I'm sure a lot of people reorganise their Flickr photos and unwittingly break the picture links in the forums.
Just saying that Flickr may not be the best methods for showing pictures on this forum sure to the amount of broken links

The only advantage another host might have is that you can edit and upload with the same name so it won't break the link.

If people delete their image from Flickr it maybe because they don't want it shown on any forums, if they do then they can edit their post.

Not if the forum locks down edits after a certain time period.

I've done a few :dummy: in my time online, and had some irrepairable fall-outs with forum owners. After which I wouold never use a forum to host an image and always use Flickr where I have the option to break the link at a later date should I wish to do so.

The Guest Pass on Flickr is a useful tool, you can hide an image from your Flickrstream and still allow click-throughs from forums where you've hosted it. You do need to understand basic bbcode to use it this way.

For those that don't understand, i was having a moan at the amount of pictures unavailable and was thinking out loud of a better way.

Not the first time somebody found me a little incoherent...;)

But what quite a few people have been telling you is that link breaking is not necessarily accidental so a 'better way' isn't required.

Hi Brian - Agreed not necessarily accidental, but i would be surprised if a deliberate link break was in the majority.

What happens if you start a thread with a picture on TP which is hosted from wherever you have it hosted, and then delete that picture from your hosting site?

Umm, the same thing when you delete a picture on flickr?

The point i was originally trying to make, and apparently failing.. was that there's an abundance of missing pictures from flickr that i believe are often down to people reorganising their flickr photos and inadvertently breaking the links.

I think maybe it just stands out more as Flickr have the 'image not longer available' graphic and also it is the most widely used. I have come across a fair number of threads with little red x's etc where other hosted photos have gone walkies.

But just reorganising photos on Flickr does not break the links.

You're not failing to get it across, it's just that what you're trying to get across isn't right.

But i'm always right...!
;)
Well i guess there's zero support for doing it any different. Time to move on..

Exactly, deleting a picture could be classed as reorganising I suppose  I dont exactly have hundreds of pics on Flickr but the ones I have deleted in the past are because I have since taken better shots of and look at the older ones as being crap ;) And that is really something you cannot stop.
