Hi was not sure where to put this.

I had a comment on one of my posts.

"hi , this is a great photo
We are textbook publishers Will we be able to do this picture authorized"

Am I right in assuming this is just another way of asking if they can use the image for free ? If so why not just ask can we use it ?

Can anyone explain please.

Thanks

Gaz

Maybe English is not their first language.

They haven't said they want it for free, but nor have they said they want to pay.

The ball is in your court, if you're happy for them to use it, just send them a nice email quoting your terms.

Once you mention payment you will probably hear nothing more from them. I hope you haven't uploaded a full size image.

Never thought of that. Thanks

Good point Phil.In the past I have just let people use them if asked. It was just they used the term authorized so it just threw me a bit not sure why really.
I hope you haven't uploaded a full size image.
Hmmmm quite possible as it was uploaded a while back when I did upload larger files. I now upload at 1024 longest side but still on the max jpeg setting (pshop) Out of intrest what is the best size to upload for display.

I never upload anything bigger than 800 on the longest side. Quality suffers a little bit but as most folk seem to view them on phones or tablets that's not a major consideration.

You can always go back and replace the large size image with a smaller one. No one will notice. If they've downloaded it already you are too late anyway.

Thanks. Yes I suppose I could.

My opinion might be contentious but it's the way I see things so sorry if this offends any pros out there...

I don't seek to make money from photography - I do it as a hobby. If someone wants to use my photos and they ask me, I'm unlikely to object as long as they're being used "appropriately". If they're planning to use them inappropriately I'll assume they'll just take them without asking, mind.

Who knows what may come of them using a photo - probably nothing but you never know. Because it's a hobby, I'd be quite pleased that someone felt it worth using.

Sorry if this puts pros noses out of joint, but I would never see any of my shots being in competition with professionally shot images. I assume that if someone wants a "proper" image they'll pay for it - spending hours scouting out free images on flickr or whatever cannot be a productive use of time versus simply paying someone competent for the rights.

About the file sizes uploaded -am I right in thinking you can control whether to allow download or not in the settings?

Hi Paul
Yes this is what I have done/thought in the past when asked.
Thanks for putting it into words so well.

Yea, but that will only stop the laziest of people from knicking it. (y)
But doesn't it mean they'll only get the smaller size?

I thought I had read somewhere that most photos that are stolen are for web pages/blogs/ads etc and 800 is plenty big enough for that.

Sorry, didn't see the earlier post that was referring to. If you only upload 800px, then they can only get 800px, but as said, that won't stop most people who want to knick it.

I thought newbie was talking about some option to limit what file was linked to / could be downloaded. Kinda like how people think disabling right-click stops people from ripping photos off.
