Yes
I've had a Flickr Pro account for a few years now and had an email to say my payment had failed for the auto renewal. Knowing that Flickr improved the free account offerings, I contacted them to ask what the difference was nowadays. The reply said:

Free Flickr account
1 TB of photo and video storage
Upload photos of up to 200 MB each
Upload videos of up to 1GB each
Video playback of up to 3 minutes each
Limitlessly download your original photos
Flickr Pro account
All the benefits of a free account
No advertisements
Ability to view your stats page

I quite like the stats page but it wasn't the worse thing to lose. However today Flickr changed be back to a free account and there seems to be more differences. For example I cannot see all my images in my photostream. Some of the older shots are not displaying - however they can be seen if looking in the relevant album.

Does anybody else know of anything else they are not telling me?

There used to be a difference in that pros but not frees could upload images of any size, and viewers could see all the sizes including original much bigger than "large".

Flicker image search by keywords has become buggy of late. They keep fixing the bugs, and then re-introducing them. So don't rely on keyword search to know if images are still findable.

Doesn't the free account only display the last 200 images?
Also I don't think there's any way back for you now. Once your pro account has gone you can't get it back or even open a new one.

Not sure if you also lose the ability to download your images or images over a certain size?

Not true as I went from my pro account, to the free account and then a few months later decided I wanted my stats back so just followed the link in the Flickrmail to let me upgrade back to pro from the original message that said click here to update your payment details

Many apologies. When they first upgraded the free account they wouldn't let you go backwards. They must have changed it again following all the howls of complaint.

They load for me, but on a different page. Select the page number at the bottom of the images it loads up.

I've noticed that Free account holders seem to be restricted to a max membership of 50 Groups / Communities. Could a Free member confirm this?

Think this is nonsense, I'm in way more groups than that and I've never been paid up.

The only difference I can tell between free and pro is the stats/adverts. And adverts can be hidden by ad block, so you're really just paying for stats.

Yep, nonsense. I'm on 136 groups and counting!
And I don't notice the adds!

Isn't Flickr Pro unlimited storage?
Originally it was also said, "Flickr Pro users can replace photos (without having to re-upload) and archive high-resolution original images".

Can the free users simply replace a photo? If I decide I want to edit an upload I just click on replace and the new version takes the place of the original. Is that available to all users?

I think that only Pro users can replace a picture.

I don't think free users can 'replace', they need to re-upload.

Pretty sure I've replaced a photo and I'm not on pro. But i think you loose the links and have to redo any links in forums etc.

You can replace, click Edit and you get the choice of delete or replace, done this many times.
Correct, little square with 'pencil' to right/bottom of image.

Out of interest, how much does a Pro Flickr account cost?

I ask this because I've always had a Pro account provided as part of my Broadband package, so have no idea what it is worth, or what the advantages were.

Dave

Think it's about £24 p.a.

I do apologise for talking such nonsense. I asked the question as I do notice that an awful lot of people appear to belong to 50 Groups. Not 51, or 52 - but dead on 50, as though it was a cap for another account type. There must be another explanation.

Use to have Flickr Pro before it all changed the look of flickr, flickr pro ran out and didn't bother renewing it never really seen the point...

Also if you use Google Chrome I downloaded one of those add blocker apps and it stops the ads

I think that only Pro users can replace a picture.

Anyone can do that now, free or pro

Looks like its changed then. When they first introduced the free/pro packages, the one thing that kept me paying was the ability to replace an image and the free version didn't have that feature. Time to rethink me thinks.

Same here thats what I was paying for, Pretty pointless now as your only paying really for removing ads which is hardly any, I mean no one is going to use up 1tb anytime soon...

I've remained with Flickr Pro - the cost's modest enough, and I enjoy looking at the stats page now and then. Besides, I'm far more inclined to pay for a service directly, than have the business flail around with trying to recoup their costs through adverts that many people block anyway - doesn't really seem like a winning business plan for anybody but the agencies selling ads.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I agree with the last poster about it being a modest cost (about £1 p.m. on the 2 year deal) but the adverts are virtually non existent and so far I haven't missed the stats as I can still go on individual images to see the number of views. I'm even wondering whether there might be an app out there that would do it?

My photostream says I've got 722 photos but without counting each of them I don't think they are all showing in my photostream. Some of the older ones appear to be missing but are in albums. Everyone else got a free account or moved to a free account and found this?

I've always stuck with the Pro membership - this May, it'll be 10 years. I presently have 5,600 photos uploaded. I just checked your page, and I notice that you belong to exactly 50 Groups again. Have they been restricted? Or is Flickr lying to me, or are were you previous to switching, a member of exactly 50 Groups? I just wonder if I'm talking nonsense or not.

I don't think you are talking nonsense Paul but I do think Flickr is. I'm actually in 102 groups and when I've looked at your profile Flickr also reckons you are in 50 groups as well so it's not a pro vs free thing. I've just googled this and it could be a "design feature" :p

Out of interest the very bottom image in your photostream was the foxes shot from Colchester Zoo. Was this your very first upload that you made?

Thanks for explaining that mystery Peter. Yes, the fennec fox was my first upload in May 2005.

No problem Paul. You at least are showing all your images. Any Free members out there thinking not all their photostream is showing?

Do you really get a stats page if you upgrade to pro now?
Not sure Michael but I used to have it before the downgrade happened

I lost my pro account when the renewal failed because I'd not updated my card details.

They emailed me to tell me that they would try again but despite updating my card details and asking them to take payment - it ran out so I got downgraded to free account.

Emailed them several times about it but never got a single reply.

The worst thing about losing your PRO status is that you will be lumped together with us scummy free account people. With our holiday snaps and pictures of cats and every single shot taken at some kids birthday party. Including all the out of focus and blank frames.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

??? Where has that come from

Which Broadband package is that- I used to have it with my BT package (Yahoo)but lost it last year I think whenBT and Yahoo split last year

No free pro accounts with BTBB anymore, that stopped early last year.

Well, I still have my free Flickr Pro account with my BTBB package Craig, albeit I have been with BT since the dial-up days.

Dave

P.S. Here's what my Flickr account says:

You are signed in to Flickr via your Yahoo ID. You have a Pro account, at no cost as long as you keep your BT Yahoo! service.

From the BT website:
"We're about to move everybody from BT Yahoo email to our new email service called BT Mail. Once we've moved your email across to BT Mail you'll no longer be able to access Flickr using your BT Yahoo email address. If you use Flickr, you need to make some changes now so you can continue to enjoy it.
To keep your Flickr account you'll need to link your BT Flickr log in to a new Yahoo ID. Once you've done this, you'll be able to continue to use the Flickr service with your new Yahoo ID. (The same Yahoo ID can be used for all Yahoo services.)
Please note, when you move, you'll be transferred from Flickr Pro to Flickr free. You can upgrade at any time via the Flickr website."

BT has parted company with Yahoo & therefore Flickr, they have not yet caught up with everybody.
So it will happen I'm afraid!

That's spot on. I am one of those BT has yet to catch up with but I have change my FLICKR ID in readiness.
